What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Mobile Dental Clinics

We are proud to be in partnership with St Thomas Health and Ascension to provide comprehensive dental care as part of their mobile medical outreach events assisting people in need throughout the Middle Tennessee area. We provide restorative, surgical, and emergency dental care during these outreach events in Hickman, Rutherford, Grundy, and Davidson Counties. This program is now advancing into other parts of the United States to serve additional under-served populations.

Population(s) Served
Economically disadvantaged people
Unemployed people

In partnership with the University of Tennessee Dental School, Hope Smiles offers a Hope Restore elective course to fourth-year students, providing them the opportunity to receive advanced training while they learn and serve hands-on with us at our Nashville clinics. Dr. Phillip Kemp, adjunct faculty at UT Dental School, oversees and instructs the students alongside other volunteer faculty instructors, providing the students an opportunity to experience the real impact of quality dental care.

Population(s) Served
Unemployed people
Economically disadvantaged people

Hope Smiles vision in Haiti is to see provision of excellent dental care at the hands of highly-trained and skilled Haitian professionals. We are equipping, empowering, and releasing Haitian Dental Professionals to provide excellent and compassionate dental care in economically sustainable ways, breaking the cycle of poverty and addressing the critical issues of dental health and quality patient care. We relentlessly committed to the discipleship of people within their community, mobilizing them as servants of the Kingdom Gospel within their community. We are establishing two fully operational Hope Smiles Dental Centers for world-class dental care that serve as the front-runners of the next generation of dental care in Haiti. We deploy community-based mobile dental clinics to provide communities surrounding our Dental Centers with access to dental care. We are launching a Community Health Advocate Program educating community members on oral health, hygiene, and preventative care.

Population(s) Served
Unemployed people
Economically disadvantaged people

We develop local leaders who transform lives through quality, compassionate dentistry for all Ugandans. We do this by working shoulder to shoulder with talented, passionate Ugandan dental professionals, providing advanced dental training and resources combined with practical leadership development. Hope Smiles team members transform the lives of all Ugandans through our "Hub and Spoke" clinical model. The "Hub" is a dental center in Jinja that offers all dental services, including dental implants and orthodontics. The "Spokes" are mobile teams operating in remote villages and schools throughout Uganda with no access to dental care. Week-long outreaches are held in these remote villages and schools, establishing a "Mobile Dental Home" for each community. This creates access to consistent, quality dental care for previously unreached communities.

The end result is a group of local leaders running an independent, innovative clinical model transforming lives in previously unreached communities all over Uganda. Ugandan Hope Smiles team members are focused on replicating our clinical model in other locations currently without access to transformative dental care. Leaders develop more leaders...who develop more leaders.

Local leadership development combined with the Hope Smiles clinical model creates generational impact.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to create dental homes for 10 communities in 4 countries by 2030.

Leadership Development-Empower Local Dental Professionals to Lead the Charge
We wholeheartedly believe in equipping, empowering, and releasing indigenous dental professionals to be the leaders who provide quality, compassionate, and comprehensive dental care. We, as North Americans, must shift our perspective to that of a support-staff role and equip national dentists to lead the charge toward truly sustainable dentistry. The full-time presence of highly trained indigenous dental professionals in local clinics provides both sustainable employment and sustainable patient care.

Hope Smiles provides an organizational structure and culture that gives our talented teams the tools to transform lives. We do this by intentionally teaching leadership and our core values to each of our team members. Our work is driven by Love, and our team members must be humble, hungry to succeed, and relationally smart. Our organizational culture also places the highest emphasis on effective, constructive communication throughout all levels of our teams. Through focused, one on one leadership training and problem solving activities we are intentionally creating generational change. Effective leaders create more leaders…who create more leaders.

The realization of the Integrated Hope Smiles Model of Oral Healthcare was arrived at after over a decade of working in the "field". Our greatest capabilities are our decades long dental experience coupled with the idea of continual improvement tested through the lens of our Core Values and, to the best of our ability, listening to what God is calling us to do.

Our greatest accomplishment is our Hope Smiles Uganda Dental center in Jinja. 8 years in the making, we currently employ 27 Ugandan Dental professionals & treat 13,000 patients per year. Our Hub & Spoke Model operates out of a central "hub" dental center with portable dental clinics acting as the "spokes" in 18 remote communities expanding the access to dental care by bringing dental care to those communities. Importantly, in 2021 the Hope Smiles Dental center will become independently Financially Sustainable which creates Sustainable Employment and Sustainable Access to dental care for patients.

Our next goal is to scale the Hope Smiles Integrated Model to another part of Uganda beginning in 2022.
