Mission

Against The Grain Productions (ATG) functions as a traditional 501(c)(3) nonprofit…but with a twist. In the true spirit of its name, ATG finds unconventional, innovative and entertaining ways to promote leadership, positive identity, unity and artistry in the Asian American community; promote awareness of Asian American culture; give a platform to emerging Asian American artists; and provide inspiration to the community around us to think and act “outside the box."

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Fashion for a Passion

Fashion for a Passion is our main annual event that draws people from all over the Dallas community in a celebration of emerging Asian American talent in the arts. Each year, guests enjoy musical performances, a fashion runway show and silent/live auctions that include pieces from our featured artists. Fashion for a Passion is also the perfect opportunity for us to give center stage to a few of our ATG Artistic/Groundbreaker Leadership Scholarship winners.

Each year, Fashion for a Passion just gets better and better! In 2014, we not only showcased an incredibly talented group of Asian American designers, artists and musical performers but also saw a record 450 guests and raised more than $35,000, the most raised to-date.

Population(s) Served

ATG hosts an engaging and educational panel discussion comprised of dynamic and influential Asian American industry leaders who speak on their motivating path to success. The event’s mission is to inspire leadership, provide mentorship and provoke thought on how we are all capable of becoming groundbreakers.

Population(s) Served

Through screenings of co-founder Tammy Nguyen Lee’s award-winning documentary Operation Babylift and our partnership with film festivals around the country to help support and promote the work of today’s Asian American filmmakers, Against The Grain hopes to entertain, engage and enlighten the community while also raising funds to benefit our various causes.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

ATG is an innovative resource that gives voice to significant, relevant and untold stories in our community. In true spirit of the definition, ATG Against The Grain Productions Inc. was founded to produce media and events that promote awareness and unity of Asian American culture and identity. We also raise funds for orphanages and our scholarship fund for Asian American students.

We find unconventional, innovative and entertaining ways to promote leadership, positive identity, unity and artistry in the Asian American community; promote awareness of Asian American culture; give a platform to emerging Asian American artists; and provide inspiration to the community around us to think and act “outside the box."

1) Community Outreach by participation at community festivals, events to build/strengthen our relationships with others who can help further our mission.
2) Host events that directly impact our community and provide a platform for artists and leadership development
3) Traditional fundraising by Dine for a Cause, Shop for a Cause and sales of merchandise
4) Social Media to communicate our ideas and raise awareness for our cause
5) Production of media

As part of our mission, Against The Grain Productions produces educational, enlightening and entertaining events that drive awareness to Asian American culture and the arts. In addition to the community outreach this provides, proceeds from ticket sales, auctions, raffles and other fundraisers at these events contribute a significant amount of funding for our supported orphanages in Asia, scholarship fund and community outreach programs. In order to make the maximum contribution toward our supported causes from these events and deliver an amazing experience for our audiences, we count on the support of generous sponsors.

- In 2009, we released the award-winning feature documentary, Operation Babylift: The Lost Children of Vietnam, which screened at more than a dozen festivals and won two awards.
- In 2010, we created the Artistic Scholarship fund to support Asian American students pursuing a degree in the arts.
- In 2011, we distributed nearly $10,000 for orphanage aid and outreach programs, gave $2,000 Artistic Scholarships to two exemplary students and raised more than $20,000 at Fashion for a Passion, which more than 300 guests attended.
- In 2012, we provided $13,500+ of aid to half a dozen orphanages in Vietnam and Thailand; awarded $2000 in Artistic Scholarships; gave $900 in scholarships for young adoptees to attend culture camps; selected our first recipient for the $5,000 Sunna Lee Leadership Scholarship; and raised nearly $30,000 net at Fashion for a Passion, which was attended by nearly 400 guests.
- In 2013, we provided $18,000 of aid to our supported orphanages in Vietnam and Thailand, awarded $6,000 in scholarships and gave almost $1,000 to disaster relief, raising nearly $45,000.
- In 2014, we hosted our first all-female panel at Groundbreakers Speak; raised more than $50,000 total with other fundraising events, gave nearly $20,000 to orphanages in Vietnam and Cambodia (with $5,000 earmarked for The Philippines and Thailand in 2015); and awarded $11,000 in scholarships.
-In 2015, we gave nearly $30,000 to our supported orphanages in Vietnam, Cambodia, The Philippines and Thailand, expanding our aid to include underprivileged children; awarded $10,000 in Artistic Leadership Scholarships to ten talented high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students as well as $1,000 in camp scholarships to ten young adoptees to attend culture/heritage camps across the country; attended Vietnamese Heritage Camps as a team and participated in community festivals to increase unity and awareness of our causes and culture; received an important $5,000 grant at the end of 2015 from the Orchid Giving Circle and Dallas Women's Foundation to begin our next documentary that will uncover the sensitive subject of domestic violence against Asian women and children, bringing us back to our roots to product compelling content that will share untold stories to education and inspire.
