Briscoe is S.M.A.R.T. | Art education partnership

The Briscoe is S.M.A.R.T. TEKS aligned program creates a foundation for creative expression by introducing Briscoe Elementary School students to multiple art forms through a 4 step process: campus tours, studio classes, student research, presentations, formal art exhibitions. S.M.A.R.T. engages and collaborates with non-profits, professional artists and community leaders to speak and present to students, hosts student exhibitions for the entire community to attend and provides financial support for field trips and special needs as they arise. The S.M.A.R.T. facility is located across the street from Briscoe Elementary affording students unprecedented access to artists, a professional student studio, classroom and exhibition space.

Since 2012, S.M.A.R.T. has awarded 4 micro-grants per year to San Antonio artists. The micro grants are for travel and art supplies. Each grant is $250.

Every March since 2011, SMART has hosted a national or international artists at it's multifunctional facility. The 4 week residency encourages artist experimentation and requires residence's to give back to our community by working with our younger students. S.M.A.R.T. provides a small stipend and lodging for artists and at the end of their residency, SMART hosts an artists talk and opening exhibition.

This space serves to host our exhibition and performance programming. The Project Space hosts 12 formal exhibitions and over 25 scheduled and unscheduled shows annually. The line-up always includes student and community exhibitions giving us the opportunity for mentorship and giving students an opportunity to grow professionally.

Every Second Saturday of every month S.M.A.R.T. projectspace opens it's doors for the general public to view new works by exhbiting artists. The S.M.A.R.T. facility hosts an estimated 500 - 1000 people from the community for this artwalk.
