Harmony Community Development Corporation (Harmony CDC) was organized in 2001 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit to stimulate the development of affordable housing, create business ownership and increase social services and provide other charitable and educational services in our community. Since the re-defining of Harmony CDC in 2007, the organization has made remarkable strides toward impacting the community and enriching the organization's social services. While serving more than 9,000 individuals annually, Harmony CDC has committed 20 years to the Southern Sector of Dallas, Texas. Harmony CDC is taking new steps to further live out its mission of “strengthening families and revitalizing neighborhoods.”

Harmony Community Development Corporation (Harmony) has become a beacon of hope for many in the community as they seek to navigate the turbulent and ever-changing times brought on by the impact of the global health pandemic, COVID-19. Disenfranchised communities of need prior to the pandemic have been hit hard, resulting in loss of jobs, income, and the threat of loss of home. However, the need is not just prevalent in disenfranchised communities, but middle-class and upper-middle-class families have been affected as well with an increase in unemployment. According to the Texas Workforce Commission and Texas 2036, Dallas County had approximately 260k jobless claims filed since March 2020. The loss in jobs, reduction of work hours, and the impact on both small and large businesses have had unilateral devastation to many families – real people have suffered.

This time, however, is where Harmony’s light has shined the most. From January 2020 to August, Harmony served approximately 13,000 individuals by providing housing assistance to keep people in their homes, the food so families would not go hungry, and counseling services to help people cope during a time where every day brings increasingly new challenges. Of those helped, 61% were from Oak Cliff, South Dallas, and portions of Pleasant Grove areas within the city, all being areas with high percentages of people of color. According to the City of Dallas’ Planning and Urban Design in 2019, each of these areas has higher rates of low-to median income ratios in comparison to the rest of the city of Dallas. Meaning these neighborhoods were on the frontlines of poverty and some of the most disenfranchised before COVID-19, but now are the most disproportionately impacted. Beyond the city of Dallas, Harmony also serves Cedar Hill, Duncanville, DeSoto, and Lancaster.
