What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Blanca's Kids
At times, our Medical Teams Abroad face cases that are urgent and dire, but cannot be treated locally, as they require more extensive care than can be provided in their local communities. Through Blanca’s Kids, we are able to provide these children with free airfare, housing and care, while they receive free medical care on Long Island. Following their treatment here, Blanca’s Kids continues to ensure that they receive the continued medical treatment they require in their own countries.
Medical Teams Abroad
Stretching across international borders to provide essential medical care in local communities, we offer healthcare services, as well as health education, food and school supplies and clothing in our "host neighborhoods.” Offering free healthcare to anyone in need, this program has facilitated care for over 3,000 people in the past 6 years.
Blanca’s House and Blanca’s House Ecuador
The purpose of Blanca's House Ecuador is twofold. It is our host when we arrive with our medical-mission teams in Ecuador. Potential patients are identified for surgeries prior to the arrival of Blanca’s House. Additionally, with clinics in Guayaquil, Loja, and Santa Lucia, Blanca’s House Ecuador provides ambulatory services and screenings for the people of Ecuador when mission teams are not there.
Junior Volunteers
Offering the unique opportunity to introduce young people from Long Island to medicine, our Junior Volunteer Program allows these students to join us on missions, where they volunteer and observe in and out of the operating rooms.
BLANCA’S DENTAL SERVICES
The Go Dental Mission team provides pro-bono dental services and dental health education to under-served communities in Latin America.
Go Dental Mission volunteers come from various backgrounds. Our team of volunteers are Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, and Non-Dental Volunteers with an interest in caring for children and adults in urban and rural the communities in Latin America. Our Dental Team volunteers have a passion for working with children and adults.
Patient oral health and nutritional education are key elements of the program. A portion of our volunteers have little or no dental background, however, their services are a critical component to the successful operation of our work. Non-dental volunteers work side-by-side with the dental professionals in clinical and school settings. Interacting with the people of our host country is a critical component for all short term medical mission trips and allows us to leave a lasting foot print on the community.
RHEUMATOLOGY
The Blanca’s House Rheumatology Team travels to the Blanca’s House Ecuador Clinic three to four times a year. Located in Guayaquil, the clinic provides ongoing medical care to the people of Ecuador who cannot afford of have access to quality healthcare. The purpose of these medical mission is to screen and treat patients, as well as educate Ecuadorian medical students and primary care physicians to recognize diseases, to learn up-to-date treatment techniques, and as necessary, direct patients to the appropriate specialists within Ecuador.
The team focuses on the following diseases:
Rheumatoid arthritis: an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system – which normally protects its health by attacking foreign substances like bacteria and viruses – mistakenly attacks the joints.
Osteoporosis: thinning of the bones, with reduction in bone mass, due to depletion of calcium and bone protein. Osteoporosis predisposes a person to fractures, which are often slow to heal and heal poorly.
Spondyloarthropathy: a rheumatological disease affecting the spine.
In addition to direct patient treatment by the Blanca’s House rheumatology specialists, the education component has allowed local doctors, in conjunction with Blanca’s House Ecuador, to provide a monthly clinic in which they will screen and treat patients. Their next step is to sponsor weekly clinics. The Blanca’s House Team will continue to travel to Guayaquil to provide ongoing education and treatment in conjunction with the Ecuadorian doctors and medical students.
HAITI
Sitting on a steep hill overlooking the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Meyotte has no consistent medical care. The needs are great and with the occurrence of hurricane Matthew this year, many suffered a multitude of injuries from this horrific storm. There continues to be a fierce need for basic and advanced healthcare. Our current priority is the construction of an appropriately appointed, clinical structure that will provide opportunities to care for the healthcare needs of this area. As of now there are no enclosed, structurally safe facilities. Our clinic services will include immunizations, dental exams, healthcare education, wound care and ophthalmologic evaluations. As the clinic grows, our plan is to include surgical services. The fruition of Blanca’s House Haiti is a dream come true for us and for the Haitian people.
