Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Meditation Groups
Soil and Soul has mindfulness clubs at 4 Title I high schools. Students in the clubs practice four aspects of training the mind and heart: 1) regulation of attention, 2) regulation of emotions, 3) regulation of thoughts, and 4) compassion. Learned and practiced together with peers and two mindfulness teachers, these skills result in more happiness.
“Happiness is always available in the present moment; happiness is only available in the present moment,” says Pablo del Real, Director of Mindfulness Programs for Auroras Voice and mindfulness club teacher. The mindfulness clubs help students grow in happiness by training the mind to stop, see, and appreciate the happiness available in the present moment.
Like other after-school clubs at local high schools, the mindfulness clubs are free to join and open to students in grades 9-12. The clubs typically meet once per week but during the pandemic, they have been meeting online and starting to meet at Tiger Territory Education Garden. The mindfulness clubs are currently at Atlantic Community High in Delray Beach, John I. Leonard High in Green Acres, Lake Worth Community High and Inlet Grove Community High in Riviera Beach.
Tiger Territory Education Garden
Tiger Territory Education Garden has been revitalized as an outdoor living classroom and a neighborhood sanctuary for Lake Worth where we tend to our inner and outer landscapes. Our team teaches permaculture and regenerative gardening practices to yield a variety of crops through workshops, classes and open garden hours. Mindfulness programs are offered on a sliding scale! Our revitalization of green spaces address social and environmental justice, food security issues and offer tools to support mental and emotional health for our community.
We encourage youth to fulfill their community service hours at the garden with the hope of creating future environmental stewards.
Holistic Wellness Circle
Holistic Wellness Circle is a collaboration between Soil and Soul and Cocoplum Nature School, two nonprofit organizations. Holistic Wellness Circle seeks justice and healing for families experiencing economic oppression, especially families of color with very young children. No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome.
Skills and relationships developed through Holistic Wellness Circle can be transformative for individual and family wellness. Children socialize and play outdoors. Parents and grandparents get a break from childcare and focus on holistic wellness, in partnership with other families.
Mindfulness in Nature
Soil and Soul began Mindfulness In Nature in January 2021, between peaks in the pandemic. Open to high school students throughout Palm Beach County, Mindfulness In Nature hosts up to 20 students at Tiger Territory Education Garden for mindfulness, gardening, fresh air, sunshine, and companionship.
Mindfulness In Nature connects young people to the earth. The program serves mostly Teens of Color (about 85%), including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Asian-Americans. Communities of color have limited access to the healing and nourishing elements of nature in us and around us. Helping them form healing relationships with nature, we support environmental justice.
Families of color too often bear the brunt of climate change and toxic waste. One way to support environmental justice for teenagers of color is to train them to be eco-healers. Soil and Soul strives to introduce teens of color to eco-healing through earth-work, plant walks, and mindfulness in nature spaces.
