Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Building Home Libraries
The Children’s Book Bank aims to make reading materials available to children and their families outside of school. For preschool children, who only attend part time, this includes the majority of the day; for older children, this includes summer, when lack of access to books contributes to “summer slide” (the decline in reading skills when school is out).
To ensure that the books we collect reach those most in need, and to leverage the impact of our proven literacy partners, The Children’s Book Bank works with schools, clinics, and other agencies that teach literacy skills to low-income children and families. Our program targets include:
• Birth to 3: providing baby books through the Reach Out and Read program, in which community-clinic physicians educate parents about language development and prescribe a daily dose of reading aloud.
• Age 3-5: providing a personal collection of picture books to encourage bedtime reading.
• K/Grade 1: providing early reader books for the home to supplement reading instruction efforts at select Title 1 schools.
• Gr. 2-8: providing chapter books in June to help lessen summer learning loss.
