Senior Evacuation Survey Project

An outreach campaign to
identify senior and disabled residents in
Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch, who would benefit from neighborhood assistance in
the case of widespread evacuation.

Beginning in
July 2009, a survey was developed and distributed in two senior-only communities in Rancho Bernardo, followed by a door-to-door
distribution effort in September & October 2009. The same
survey was utilized in Scripps Ranch via their SRCA newsletter to identify
seniors in need of assistance the winter of 2009.

Following data
analysis from the completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 (the
remaining five communities in Rancho Bernardo and another outreach campaign in
Scripps Ranch), a community-based network of solutions will be created and
implemented, to include linking identified seniors with a volunteer contact and provide workshops to address needs identified in the survey, to include evacuating with pets, medical devices, etc.

Population(s) Served

This program
highlights ten communities on the North County Inland Interstate 15 corridor
and provides a tailored curriculum focusing on the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) with a walk-around assessment component
to educate homeowners on how to assess their home’s risks and reduce them.  Volunteer instructors are recruited and trained from the ten communities and offer HIZ assessments at the homes of two adjacent property owners to educate people about the risks and mitigation activities for San Diego County, using the Fire Information Engine Toolkit.

Population(s) Served

This program
offers a nine-part workshop program (3 series focused on 3 distinct topics) aimed at
senior and disabled residents and their families to help them better prepare
for emergency situations.  The program is currently offered in
Scripps Ranch and Rancho Bernardo but can be expanded to other communities with financial support.

Population(s) Served

This program aims to increase community service opportunities and communication in the greater Rancho Bernardo community through the creation of a user-friendly, interactive website with a coordinated calendar component to reflect ongoing activities in the general community, along with a vehicle to encourage community service throughout the area on the website, utilizing social media and web-based tools as part of the website overhaul.
The Community Service component will focus on developing a clearinghouse for the community to match public service opportunities with youth volunteer requirements, as well as senior and retiree volunteer interest.
The Community Calendar component seeks to literally put everyone in the community on the same page, in a user-friendly format that provides easy access to pertinent information.
In addition, the website overhaul will include a community toolbox component that ghost-builds the website needed for community-based response and recovery efforts, as was needed in the aftermath of the October 2007 Witch Creek Wildfire, to meet the needs as defined by '07 wildfire survivors.
