Annual Scottsdale International Film Festival

a. Overview of Organization’s Activities: As its primary activity, the Festival presents a 10 day annual November international film festival in the Scottsdale/Phoenix community. The Festival is currently the only event in the Phoenix metropolitan area focusing primarily on multi-cultural foreign films.

b. Specific Examples of Previous Activities: During the most recent Festival we presented over 70 screenings. BALLOON won the Audience Award for Best Film along with AFTERLIFE taking Best Film from the Phoenix Film Critics Society Jury. The Festival kicked off at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts with a preview screening of MARRIAGE STORY starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.

Arizona premieres of mainstream films in 2019 at Scottsdale International Film Festival included: CLEMENCY, HONEY BOY, KNIVES OUT, PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, THE REPORT, THE SONG OF NAMES, THE TRUTH, TWO POPES and WAVES. Our closing night film was FORD v FERRARI.

c. Size and General Demographics of Audience Served: The Festival experienced a dramatic increase in ticket sales, which have more than tripled since the Festival’s inception. The Festival draws attendees from all ethnicities and income levels. The largest demographic is between the ages of 35-64.

d. Special Efforts to Reach a Broad Segment of the Community: The Festival advertises in the state’s largest daily newspaper The Arizona Republic, the weekly Phoenix New Times, and on local NPR, Facebook, and Twitter. The Festival’s PR team arranges interviews with all network affiliated and local TV stations, and coordinates numerous print and radio contests of ticket giveaways leading up to the event. The Festival actively promotes itself by means of its website, ScottsdaleFilmFestival.com, and with co-promotional partners ranging from retail outlets, to social media partners, to allied arts organizations, and through its widely circulated program guide. The Festival has also partnered with many film organizations, past and present, including the Arizona Black Film Festival, the Phoenix Film Festival, the Heard Film Festival, the Mesa Film Festival, The Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival, The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (SCPA) Discovery Film Series, and free Sunday showings at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Create goodwill which the organization needs when starting to relaunch the November 2020 dates.
Activate a community of care through taking care of volunteers. Reach out to check on volunteers going back three years.
Call our largest donors immediately using a personal touch. Multiple calls is not acceptable so only one call per Fest volunteer to each donor.

Pose questions to donors: 1. How is your family, how are you doing? 2. What's your sense of the future? 3. Do you see needs and opportunities for the Fest to be of greater service in the future?

Convey: 1. The mission of the Fest in a "now more than ever" perspective. Involve and inform the donors of our revised planning and pivoting.
2. The timeline for our event vs. the new normal we believe that we will be rising at the time when the community is ready to rejoin and reconnect. 3. Watch out for changed sensibilities and be respectful.

The Board members will divide and allocate the outreach phone calls to volunteers and the top donors. We will allocate 60 minutes daily over the next two months to make our overtures to the volunteers and donors. There is nothing but time at the moment and a personal call to the two cohorts will be a kind and respectful outreach.

We will be starting this initiative in the coming week.
