Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Pittsburgh Kids Foundation has been a critical partner is the development of the IDADEE, a full-fledged community development organization in Haiti. The IDADEE campus is a 15 acre plot of land in Balan, Morne Rouge, 15 miles west of Cap-Hatien. The campus houses the Children's Home, Kindergarten, Primary School, Secondary School (opening in 2023), Joshua House retreat center, Vocational School, a soccer field, playground and the Community Chapel. Just down the road is the CHIDA hospital.
In 2017, we opened a new hospital (CHIDA). This population is very “underserved" when it comes to accessible, quality healthcare. Our goal is to provide high quality healthcare to those who need it regardless of their ability to pay for it. Our current operating budget is 564k; the vast majority of this comes from fundraising. Over 87% of our patients cannot even afford to pay the $10 fee for a hospital visit and no patient is every turned away due to lack of finances.
In an effort to increase sustainability, food security, and self-sufficiency within the community, the Children's Home's (IDADEE) board of directors has identified agriculture as one of their next large-scale projects. IDADEE owns an additional 30 acres of farmland near the campus for this project. The cultivation of this land will produce food for kids at the children's home, students of the IDADEE schools, patients of the CHIDA hospital, and malnourished individuals within CHIDA's Community Health Program. IDADEE intends this agriculture project to promote farming around the community, providing job opportunitites for local farmers and training for students of the IDADEE Vocational School.
Safe and reliable shelter is one of the base needs for people everywhere. In the first round of a neighborhood census study, IDADEE has identified 67 families who are in critical need of adequate shelter. IDADEE's Community Housing project will provide single-family homes for these community members. Additionally, IDADEE is hoping to build dorms and small apartments that will serve IDADEE & CHIDA employees, and students as they transition out of the Children's Home.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Strategies:
o We continue to build upon the training that we provided for our staff prior to opening up the hospital. American doctors and health professionals have assisted with this training.
o We need to continue to address the growing needs through successful fundraising. We communicate with our donors quarterly so that they can share in our journey and progress.
o We are continuing to cement current relationships and initiate new ones with pharmaceutical companies and other non profits that donate & supply medical equipment at low cost.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Capabilities:
o We have a passionate and gifted Medical Director in place. He has pulled together a gifted & energetic staff that has already shown an ability to adapt and a desire to learn.
o We had to raise a significant amount of capital in order to build the hospital. We have now identified the need to add on a small “operating room” where basic lifesaving surgeries can be done.
o We have already developed some significant relationships in the Medical Community here in the United States. The hospital is well equipped and these organizations have expressed an ongoing desire to help.
o There are many medical professionals who have already approached us about wanting to go to Haiti and serve in the hospital. This has been delayed by the ongoing “political unrest.” We have a “Guest House" with a trained staff that is prepared to host these visitors. Our Medical Director has a genuine openness to learn from these visitors and is enthusiastic about building these partnerships.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our ongoing “community development" work in Haiti has led to:
1) Three “Children's Homes" (collectively called 'IDADEE') which care for 421 children on a daily basis. The majority of students come from homes where a full academic scholarship is necessary and provided. In 2021, there were 87 students enfrolled in the pre-school/kindergarten, 289 enrolled in the primary school, and 45 enrolled in the vocational school's current training course. 53 students graduated from the vocational school's last training course.
2) The IDADEE schools employ 48 people in sustainable jobs. They include 33 teachers, 8 cooks, and 7 other faculty positions.
3) A partnership with Water Missions that provides safe drinking water and sanitary latrines for 30k people in the area.
3) The CHIDA hospital staff statistics for 2021 are as follows:
-133 people work at CHIDA
-The hospital treats an average of 60 patients a day. In 2021 alone, 18,394 patients were treated
-The community health program see 200 people a day
-We are serving about 30,000 people in the local community and expanding to other communities
-CHIDA delivered 106 babies in 2021
4) The IDADEE farm has 5 employees who manage a chicken coup with 5,500 hens. A new phase of the project has just begun by adding livestock which include goats, pigs and cows. The farm will also produce fruits, vegetables and legumes.
