Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
For individuals with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), optimal mobility—including walking, moving, and moving around using transportation is crucial for participation in many aspects of life, ranging from personal hygiene maintenance to social activity engagement. Besides adaptations of the environment and measures to improve an individual's physical capacity, mobility devices (i.e. “products and technology for personal indoor and outdoor mobility, sport, and transportation. can be used to optimize mobility level after SCI and thereby constitute and essential component to improving the quality of life for people with Spinal Cord Injuries. We aim to inspire people with SCI to achieve the highest quality of life possible, keeping a "will2walk" through life with the challenges SCI presents to individuals, families, and communities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Paralysis can completely change a person's life. It can be frightening, depressing, and daunting at first to consider how to reengage with previous actives and relationships, such as those involving family, employment, friendships, and recreation/exercise. The Will2Walk Foundation empowers people with SCI to return to an active and productive lifestyle by providing adaptive devices. Program components are:
Education - programs and services that enhance the lives of individuals and families impacted by SCI
Awareness - community outreach to help advance the cause for people and families impacted by SCI
Scholarship Program - Will2Walk offers financial assistance to those with traumatic spinal cord injuries in need of equipment or services to keep them active, fit and independent. Two programs are available: the Emergency Fund and Scholarship Program.
Peer mentor programs for youth, adults, families, and employers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Founded in 2008, the Will2Walk Foundation was the vision of President rich Hamill, who sustained a Spinal Cord Injury in an auto accident in 1992. Will2Walk is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is led by a volunteer Board of Directors many with Spinal Cord Injuries and to date is funded 100% from personal donations and event proceeds. Will2Walk provides funding to individuals in need of equipment and/or services to support a healthy, active, lifestyle.
Through our major fundraising events and grant writing we hope to be able to support as many SCI individuals as possible through our scholarship program.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Through the generous giving of our donors, the Will2Walk Foundation has raised over $165,000.00 which allows us to provide adaptive devices and mentor services to over 72 people with Spinal Cord Injuries annually.
We continue to raise awareness in the community of the challenges people with Spinal Cord Injuries face on a daily basis.
Working to support more post-injury individuals regain access to the job market by providing them with assistance to obtain adaptive motor vehicle devices so that they can drive.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
