Mission

Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference is a youth-led service-learning organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering youth in leadership and service. Hands4Hope strives to develop and nurture young leaders in our community into socially responsible, civic minded residents who have compassion for those in need; who engage in action to bring about change; and who work for a safe, vital community. Hands4Hope youth create and plan their own projects to support local charities and address unmet community needs. Along the way, they gain experience and skills in creative leadership, financial literacy, organizational cooperation and project management, skills essential in life.

Notes from the nonprofit

"Before I joined Hands4Hope I wasn't as outgoing as I am now and I was uncomfortable with who I was. Hands4Hope has let me find who I am and strengthen all the skills that helped me build my confidence. " ---- Maya Moss, 12th grade, Folsom High School ---- "One thing that is very unique about Hands4Hope is that the program is solely led by the youth. Each and every project is planned, carried out, and reflected upon by the youth. With every event I attended I learned more about my community and its needs." ---- Nadia Jones, Hands4Hope Alumni ----

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

"Explore-Act-Lead" | Unique Youth Leadership Model Hands4Hope-Youth Making a Difference youth participants explore social issues surrounding them, take action by choosing and designing service projects, then lead these projects from start to finish - everything from food and clothing drives to anti-bullying campaigns. Along the way, they gain experience and 21st century skills essential to success in college, the workforce and in life. We're breaking the barriers on volunteerism. Working alongside adult mentors, these youth are building relationships with people and organizations to solve real issues in their community in real-time. Age limitations and liability issues often restrict youth from volunteering directly at some nonprofits. Hands4Hope's network of 45 nonprofit partners allows youth volunteers the opportunity to serve the hungry, veterans, foster children, mentally challenged adults and children, and so many others in need.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Education Program

The Hands4Hope Education Program is designed to engage youth through positive youth development, effective youth-adult partnerships and service-learning. Education is paired with community service to allow youth to learn-by-doing, expand their knowledge of the community, and build valuable skills. Significant pillars of the Education Program are the 14 on-campus clubs and eight after-school committees open to youth in 6th to 12th grades from Placerville to Folsom. Each club and committee is led by a team of youth leaders; therefore an integral component of the program is leadership development for youth who want to learn and practice their leadership skills.

Adults

The Community Engagement Program gives youth hands-on experience in community service, many times bolstering their resumes for college applications. They engage in meaningful events and outreaches as they learn more about the needs around them. It is an enriching real-life experience focused on youth development and relationship-building. Our goal is to deepen their understanding of community issues, provide opportunities to make a difference in the community, and give youth exposure to people they may not encounter in their daily lives. Youth in Kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible participants and we currently offer an average of 15 outreach opportunities each month.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Maximize Organizational Development to Enable Growth
Optimize team members individually and as a whole with clear communication, defined roles and responsibilities, staff appreciation, and staff development.
Focus on strategic deliverables, leveraging time and talents in engaging with donors and stakeholders in order to excel in delivering on mission.
Continue to build on Pathway To Change, adding and updating policies, procedures, and process maps as needed.
Determine plan and process for transforming collected data and evaluations into useful information.
Refine the 2-3 year Strategic Plan, adding corresponding draft budgets, and develop goals and objectives that unify the board and staff as to our long term vision, with shorter-term actions, needs and deliverables to make significant strides toward that vision.
Outline succession plan, including skills and strengths needed for key positions, development opportunities, and a clear timeline where possible to plan for a smooth and thoughtful transition of leadership.

Expand Our Reach and Impact
Strengthen donor communication and engagement to reach and cultivate new supporters, strengthen ties with existing supporters, and expand our brand recognition.
Work to build strong and consistent Folsom Steering Committee engagement to forge new networks and relationships for support, identify new community engagement opportunities, and raise community awareness, all in order to ensure financial sustainability of the Folsom-based programs.
Explore ways to target and vary messaging to stakeholder groups and subgroups to increase engagement and strengthen relationships. Track progress against donor/volunteer retention goals and develop new strategies as needed. Continue to identify more ways for youth to engage directly with supporters and stakeholders.

Meet Our Financial and Legal Responsibilities
Continue to adapt, grow, and diversify fundraising mechanisms, meet our financial reserves goal, and build for future growth.
