Growing Spine Study Group

The GSSG was initiated through educational tutorials and multicenter data collection in 2002 in response to a growing interest about improving treatment options for early onset scoliosis.  The group’s first scientific project was presented at the Scoliosis Research Society’s annual meeting in 2003.  The peer response to this initial research study was overwhelming and multiple institutions asked to collaborate and participate in future research studies.  Thus, the GSSG was formed.  The GSSG is now an internationally recognized study group comprised of pediatric spine deformity surgeons who specialize in the treatment of early onset scoliosis and related spinal and chest wall deformities.

Population(s) Served

The International Congress on Early Onset Scoliosis (ICEOS) meeting is designed for orthopaedic and neurological surgeons, fellows and residents who include pediatric spinal deformity surgery in their practices. In addition, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians providing non-operative care of spinal deformities may benefit from the course.

As a result of this activity, the participants should be better able t
Describe growth of the spine & chest growth, and how to make decisions on treatment of early onset spinal deformity.
Diagnose and recognize the natural history of syndromes causing early onset spinal deformity.
Describe and minimize treatment complications of infection and neurologic damage.
Identify biomechanical issues of immature bone, vertebrae, and ribs which affect treatment of EOS.
Describe pulmonary physiology as it relates to EOS.
