David Holt’s State of Music is an Emmy-nominated public TV series distributed nationwide by PBS
since 2015. Hosted by four-time Grammy winner David Holt, the series showcases the traditional
music of southern Appalachia in half-hour episodes shot on location— primarily in North Carolina, but
also in Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia. In each episode, featured artists perform and talk with
David about their music.
Season 1 featured rising star Rhiannon Giddens (before she sang at the White House or received the
MacArthur “genius grant”); bluegrass supergroup Balsam Range; Nashville A-list guitarist Bryan
Sutton; master fiddler Bruce Molsky; balladeer and multi-instrumentalist Josh Goforth; and gospel
torchbearers The Branchettes.
Season 2 featured the Steep Canyon Rangers, purveyors of progressive bluegrass who got their break
touring with comedian Steve Martin; the European-born Kruger Brothers, virtuosos on banjo and guitar;
the young band Mipso, all recent grads of UNC-Chapel Hill; bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson and his
band Quicksilver; powerhouse vocalist Amythyst Kiah; famous guitar-maker Wayne Henderson
performing with bluegrass pianist Jeff Little; Dom Flemons, a founding member of the Carolina
Chocolate Drops; the Unity Choir of St. John AME Zion Church; and Alice Gerrard, grand-dame of
bluegrass women, performing with fiddler Rayna Gellert and singer-songwriter Laurelyn Dossett.
Season 3 showcased the talents of mandolin legend Sam Bush; Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, an
entertaining old soul in a young body; champion fiddler and step dancer April Verch; mid-life overnight
success Joe Newberry; two-time IBMA Guitar Player of the Year Molly Tuttle; and Dobro master Jerry
Douglas.
Major underwriters for David Holt’s State of Music are The Rhea Bigelow Charitable Trust; the
Community Foundation of Henderson County and its Perry N. Rudnick Endowment; Come Hear NC;
the J. Lyles Glenn Family Fund; Blue Ridge Music Trails of NC; Cheri and Ron Allari; A Bar A Ranch;
the Carlyle Adams Foundation; Fritz and Renée McPhail; Ben and Laurie Duke; Myrna Harris; Charlie
and Lois Brummitt; Richard and Jenny Schwartz; and Lee and Margaret French.
