Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
For the students who attend Third Street Academy, our goal is for them to develop not only into smart, intelligent men but also into young men who become loving fathers, committed husbands, and active leaders in the community. We also want the Third Street Academy students to become emotionally literate young men, able to lead with compassion and respect for others. The Third Street Business and Workforce Development program aims to reduce unemployment, reduce recidivism, and increase small business ownership amongst program participants. Third Street Education Center as a whole endeavors to help with community transformation and to cultivate trusted community relationships so that residents of West Greenville will enjoy a safe, secure, and creative environment in which there will be less crime; strong families with active and invested fathers and mothers; community leaders developed and empowered; availability for ongoing educational opportunities; and partnerships with churches inside and outside of the neighborhood along with other agencies and the city government.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
To help the Third Street Academy students achieve their fullest potential, we use teaching strategies that address learning styles specific to boys. Science has revealed that boys’ brains develop differently than girls’, so we use sensory experiences in our curriculum to engage boys more fully in their learning. The principal of Third Street Academy has also been working to increase family engagement in the educational process. For Third Street Business and Workforce Development participants, we are holding training events on a regular basis to teach our participants new landscape management and improvement skills. In addition, all crew members are required to complete a minimum of 60 hours of training. To address the needs of the community as a whole, Third Street Education Center has been focusing on community engagement through summer camps, which offer vibrant, safe, and meaningful programming to engage the youth of our neighborhood at an affordable price. Third Saturdays of Service are another means of community engagement in which we partner with our neighbors to enhance our neighborhood and community through work projects, neighborhood service, prayer walks, and conversations.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Third Street Academy has an advisory board comprised of experienced educators who give guidance in the area of curriculum development using research on curriculums and best practices with young men. The principal of Third Street Academy holds a Master’s degree in Religious Education, and each of the teachers at Third Street Academy must pass state requirements to be an educator. For Third Street Business and Workforce Development, our Executive Director holds his B.S. in Horticulture with a concentration in landscape contracting. Other staff members hold several certifications within the lawn care and landscaping industry. The employee in charge of Third Street Catering has 16 years of experience in the food service industry and ran his own catering company for a period of time. To help meet our goal of cultivating trusted community relationships, Third Street Education Center has a volunteer base of more 200 people who invest their time in developing relationships with students at Third Street Academy and with residents of the community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Third Street Academy currently offers education for grades Pre-K through 4th. Our goal is to continue to start a new grade level each year up through 8th grade. Third Street Academy currently offers extended learning hours where students explore the topics being covered during the school day in an environment that provides encouragement, learning, and growth. In the future, we endeavor to open Imago Dei Leadership Academy. Third Street Business and Workforce Development has been successfully operating for over 5 years with the goal of operating 3-5 successful workforce development programs. Third Street Catering began operation in 2019 and is focusing on training workers in the area of food service and catering. In addition, Third Street Education Center will begin a partnership with a local community college to offer a Certified Nursing Assistant program to qualified residents of the community at a reduced price with educational support.
