Full Circle Grief Center

Richmond's Comprehensive Grief Resource Center

aka Full Circle   |   RICHMOND, VA   |  www.fullcirclegc.org

Mission

Full Circle's mission is to provide comprehensive, professional bereavement support to children, families, and the community. Full Circle was started in September 2008 as a comprehensive grief resource center in the Richmond area to help meet the needs of those grieving in our community. Our organization is dedicated to those who need long-term, professional support as they work through their grief. We use creative expression to enable children to share the many emotions that come along with experiencing the death of someone significant. Full Circle offers 8-week support groups for families, overdose loss, suicide loss, and perinatal loss - free of charge. We also provide individual counseling services for children and adults - insurance and self-pay accepted.

Hand On Healing Counseling Groups

Hands On Healing are offered to children (ages 3-18) and their families who are grieving any type of death.

Population(s) Served
Families
Children and youth

Full Circle is the only organization in Richmond that provides bereavement support to inner-city schools in their communities. By going into their communities, we help families who would not otherwise have access to grief support.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

Full Circle's "Conversations about Grief" series enables our professionals to educate community members, families, or other professionals about children and the grieving process, how to talk with children about grief and loss, learn ways to support them through a death, and dispel myths about children and grief. Philosophy: Many individuals are uncomfortable talking about grief, feel unsure about what to say to those who are grieving, and don't know the appropriate ways to support a child through grief. Sometimes, our society avoids the topic of grief because it makes people feel uncomfortable. At Full Circle, we feel strongly about the importance of educating the public on grief and its effects on children. Unfortunately, grief is a natural and normal part of life and adults need the knowledge to support children through these difficult times.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Groups are offered for adults who have experienced the death of a loved one due to suicide.

Population(s) Served

  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
