Program 1
Achievements include providing education and information services to numberous schools, organizations, and other interested persons regarding sustainable strategies for agriculture through vermiculture. Information is offerred thru the use of classroom workshops, farm tours, and speaking engagements at schools, garden clubs, fairs and other locations . During a tax year, we host an average of 3 school tours a week, for a total of approximately 156 tours, offerring education to more than 6,000 school-age children and students as well as their parents, teachers, and other interested adults. Our tours normally last a minimum of 1-1.5 hours, and include both a classroom learning session from one of our vermicompost experts, followed by a hands-on visit to the worm farm windrows where children can dig around in the windrows which are filled with thousands of redworms to experience firsthand how worms eat and live. Our worm farm is visited annually by nearly all of the local schools within a 100 mile radius of our farm. The teachers sometimes schedule their class tours upwards of 2 months in advance in order to reserve their tour dates. Home schools bring their students, as well as the parents, to experience the Learning Foundation's workshops and worm experience. Additionally, the agriculture soil division of the local junior college, Butte College, and the nearby Chico State University all bring their soil classes out annually to get a firsthand look at the benefits worm castings have on the soil thru vermiculture.
