What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Unlike many countries in the West, secondary school in Kenya is not free. To continue on past 8th a fee structure exists that all students going to high school must pay. This becomes unattainable as the majority of Kenyans living in rural areas survive on less than 2 dollars a day, making it impossible to send their children to school. As a result, many students drop out of school and education is placed beyond their reach. This is the gap that DAF seeks to fill.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Deborah Amoi Foundation aims to increase access to high school education for children in extreme poverty through merit based scholarships . We want to to reduce the number of orphaned and destitute children not going to school because of poverty.

1. Candidate selection criteria will be based on these policy guidelines and will not be biased on the basis of gender, age, sex, religion and disability. Selection will be open, free and fair to all deserving applicants.
2. DAF will sponsor orphans, partial orphans, destitute students and any other as the foundation deem fit. This will also be dependent on availability of funds. Scholarship will be awarded to any eligible applicant at the discretion of and in amounts determined by the committee/sponsor.
3. The Scholarship will be renewable every academic year provided that the fund has sufficient money and assets to sustain it; and the recipient student continues to maintain the standards required. This scholarship will cover needs such as school fees, boarding fees, uniform, pocket money etc.
4. All applications must be made on the official form supplied by the committee, chairperson and/or the school principal. The selection will be made from a pool of applications. This will be done in a transparent manner involving all the committee members.
5. Applicants must be residing anywhere in East Africa. Consideration will also be made for more than one student from the same family so long as they meet the stipulated selection criteria and standards.
6. All applicants must supply information pertaining to all financial information and other support requested on the application form
7. All applicants must provide a recent school report form or school leaving certificate. All academic documents must be received no later than the referenced date on the application form.
8. The application must include a letter of reference detailing why she/he is deserving of the Scholarship from the committee.
9. Each applicant must write an essay which will include a short history and biography of the student. The essay should also clearly state why the student deserves the Scholarship.
10. All applicants must accompany the application with a recent passport size photograph

Our students are required to give back and they organize their own community service projects such as planting trees, reading to the young ones, and helping the elderly in their communities by fetching water for them or running errands in general. It is exciting to note that we not only have students in universities and vocational schools in Kenya, but some are now employed and changing their destiny.

A committee will review the applications for clarity and completeness. The committee will rank them and have a face to face interview with the selected applicants and make recommendations on the ones who meet the criteria. The committee should then submit them to the sponsors in the United States. Scholarship Awards will be made ahead of time before the School term begins.

So far, we have sponsored125 poor and sometimes orphaned students to attend high school. Some of our first graduates have now gone on to graduate from college and are working. For the next few years, we aim continue our pace of 10 students a year or more.

Our overarching goal is to reduce the number of orphan and destitute children not going to school because of their poverty. We also aim to see a reduction in number provide girls with the extra guidance and services that they need, and help chronically underfunded schools with anemic budgets to obtain resources such as tables and chairs so students don't sit on the floor, running water and proper bathrooms for students. Thus in five years, we hope to have achieved substantial progress in these areas. We hope to have students on scholarship throughout Kenya. We also aim to have at least 200 students one day.
