What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Generation-2-Generation
Intergenerational service learning (ISL) is a partnership based on reciprocity and mutuality involving people of different ages working together to gain skills, values, and knowledge. Each month (Sept-April) of the academic year, approximately 560 elementary students from our local schools visit area senior living facilities and engage in ISL. During the summer (June-July), youth enrolled in the Mattoon Family YMCA camp programming participate in ISL with the seniors.
Farm-2-Table
Fit-2-Serve gardens over 2 acres of land interspersed throughout our community. The harvest from the gardens not only provides an opportunity to equip people to serve but lends support to our Farm-2-Table classes. Each month (Sept-Apr) of the academic year, approximately 150 1st graders from our local schools learn how food gets from our farms, is prepared and served, then consumed as they gather around the table. We utilize our experiential classroom setting and a teaching kitchen to instruct the students about farms, harvesting, ingredients, who makes it possible to have the food they eat, cooking practices, and so much more!
Talents-2-Strengths
Ralph Waldo Emerson is quoted as saying, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” We believe firmly in the precious resource that exists in our community: the people. Our target audience is youth; and current enrollment in our local schools is over 3,400 students, not including preschool-age youth. What potential lies ahead! Through our Community Bridges programming, we engage students from kindergarten through the 3rd grade, and we are currently piloting Talents-2-Strengths (T2S) with all 5 Williams Elementary 4th grade classes. T2S seeks to increase each student’s awareness of their talents and encourage them to utilize them in their home, at school, and in the community. One of the best ways to help children succeed - not just during their school years, but throughout their lives - is to help them develop their unique talents and learn how to turn them into strengths.
School-2-Farm
School-2-Farm programs are increasing throughout our nation, both in rural and urban communities, impacting practices at schools and early childhood care facilities. In partnership with the FFA program at Mattoon High School, Fit-2-Serve facilitates School-2-Farm programming with approximately 120 2nd graders during the academic year.Farm2School.jpg
School-2-Farm programming begins in September with a trip to the community garden to assist with the harvest The students then return to the garden in May to help plant for the new growing season. Three trips are made to Mattoon High School during the academic year to learn various farming techniques lead by FFA students. The School-2-Farm team visits individual classrooms in the months of March and April where we begin planting indoors.
Currently, food harvested from the community gardens is not purchased to be consumed by students through the cafeteria meal offerings; but it is our hope that, in time, this will come to fruition.
