BUGLE BOY FOUNDATION
Elevate and Sustain Original Live Music
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In our rural community, there is a lack of live, independent music available. Independent singer/songwriters lack a space to present their art since other area venues largely present cover bands. In our community, our local schools and libraries lack adequate funds to present specialized and varied types of music programs. Apart from a small VA clinic, Veterans in our community lack creative programs to help with challenges they face as a result of their service. Our local nursing homes lack funding to provide musical programs which improve the lives of residents. Hospice patients and their families rarely have a positive, memorable event but our Swan Song concerts can do this. We bring the healing and magical properties of music to our community.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We bring live independent music in a listening room atmosphere to Fayette County.
We take musical programs to area schools and public libraries.
We hold monthly guitar/songwriting workshops for Veterans, hosted by professional touring musicians.
We hold regular nursing home concerts featuring music familiar to residents to improve their quality of life and other benefits.
We provide "Swan Song" concerts in a genre of their choosing to hospice patients so the patient, their family and friends can enjoy a positive concert experience.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We provide approximately 95-100 live concerts featuring independent singer songwriters in an intimate listening room. Most of these concerts are also live-streamed via the internet and seen by audiences world-wide. As a "Fair Trade Venue" we support the artists with a large percentage of the ticket price.
We present varied types of musical genre in our youth programs at schools and public libraries, ranging from Blues, Americana, Western Swing and Singer/Songwriter with an Inclusion/Anti-Bullying theme.
We serve Veterans by offering monthly guitar/songwriting workshops as a chapter of Soldier Songs & Voices. Attendees indicate their time with professional musicians helping learn or improve their guitar skills, putting their thoughts to paper or song is helpful to their well-being. They also report the camaraderie with the other Veteran attendees is beneficial. Although not officially "music therapy" as the musicians are not trained therapists, they share their songwriting expertise which the participants report are helpful.
Swan Song hospice patient concerts provide meaningful experiences between the patient and their family. We have seen patients who have been unresponsive for days "awaken" because of the music, interact with the musicians and subsequently have conversations with their loved ones and caregivers before again drifting off.
Because other residents at nursing home facilities would park outside the room a Swan Song concert was happening, we recognized most nursing home residents also craved music so began our Nursing Home Concert Series, rotating between the area nursing homes.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Executive Director has decades of experience scheduling and hosting live concerts and is successfully completing the fifteenth musical season at The Bugle Boy venue. The Operations Director has experience as a former AmeriCorps program coordinator managing hundreds of volunteers in multiple community programs and nine years experience managing musicians and musical programs with the Bugle Boy Foundation. The Bugle Boy has a dedicated pool of volunteers in addition to a few part time staff to present the concerts as well as the outreach programs. The Bugle Boy Foundation has a competent Board of Directors from varying backgrounds to ensure best practices in the operation of the nonprofit organization.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Bugle Boy Foundation completes its fifteenth musical season December 2019. We successfully present 95-100 live shows featuring independent singer-songwriters, including many well-known, internationally recognized singer/songwriters in addition to up-and-coming songwriters. We enjoy a world-wide audience by live streaming most of our shows (the individual artist decides whether or not to live stream). We doubled the number of nursing home concerts presented in 2019, successfully presented all requested Swan Song concerts and provide award-winning professional musicians to host the Soldier Songs & Voices workshops for Veterans. We introduced award-winning singer/songwriter/producers/musicians to the youth in Fayette County featuring a message of inclusion, tolerance and kindness, which we are taking to other county schools in 2020.
We will continue to work to provide live, independent music to our community in a listening room atmosphere, providing an opportunity for independent musicians to present their art. We will continue to take the joyful and healing power of music to others in Fayette County through our outreach programs benefitting youth, Veterans, hospice patients and nursing home residents.
