What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

In Tanzania, educational resources are expensive and hard to come by in rural areas. Villages often do not have shops selling more than a few textbooks. Schools often have only a few copies for use by their teachers. For the average student, traveling to a nearby town to purchase textbooks is not a possibility, due to the expense of transportation and the books themselves. By supporting libraries with a full range of textbooks as well as other reading materials, we can help students in rural areas to get more access and become more proficient in reading. Our website also makes these things more accessible, offering free resources that are accessible via smartphones, which are increasingly prevalent in rural areas.

Scholarships

Tetea identifies students in Tanzania who both demonstrate academic potential as well as their financial need. These students then answer several questions and write an essay, after which the top students are chosen for scholarships which will cover the cost of their uniforms, school supplies, school fees, examination fees, and possible transportation and room and board at a student hostel.

Tetea is assisting a local Tanzanian non-profit, MACOBICA, to establish a community library in Maguu, located in Mbinga District, in the south-western corner of Tanzania. This facility is designed to provide access to scarce text-books and reference books to students who attend the numerous local primary and secondary schools. It is also targeting the general public to improve literacy. In general, public libraries in Tanzania are only present at the regional level, the closest one to Maguu being in Songea, several hours away by public transportation.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

As an organization, we want to improve the lives of the people in the Ruvuma region of Tanzania. An under-developed area, we feel this can best be done by empowering the youth with a quality education that will allow them to assist in the future development of the area as well as to directly assist their extended families and communities.

The strategies we have chosen to employ include the establishment of libraries, which will improve literacy rates while also providing many students with the educational resources that are lacking at their schools. The direct support of students is another strategy we have employed, enabling students who lack financial means to complete their education.

Our organization was founded by returned Peace Corps Volunteers who had spent 2-3 years each living and teaching in the Ruvuma region. As such, we are uniquely qualified to understand the issues with the education system, having worked within it at local schools. Our diverse experience in the United States has brought together many different perspectives to ensure that the implementation of our projects has been designed in the best way possible. We have a large network of RPCVs that we can tap into for technical and practical knowledge. As we have personal contacts in Tanzania, we can easily ensure that funds are being used efficiently and appropriately. Every year members of our organization to go Tanzania where they check on the progress of our projects and continue to expand our networks.

We have constructed and supplied two libraries, working closely with local NGOs. We have also sponsored over 40 students are working to develop our sponsorship programs using our libraries as a base of operations. We have created the most extensive online repository of past examinations for Tanzanians to study and continue to expand it.
