What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

In Uganda, 33% of the population of children are stunted by malnutrition and it is the underlying cause of nearly 45% of all deaths under the age of five; the root cause is largely due to lack of education and poor resource management. Most cases of severe acute malnutrition could be prevented and addressed at the village level but without tools to provide education for families and resources to make necessary changes, communities feel powerless and are left perpetuating a cycle that becomes a generational habit. Malnutrition begins at the village level but traditionally, nutrition services are only available at large regional health centers forcing families to travel great distances. Many families choose to stay at home because of the expense of travel or lack of available care for family members remaining at home.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Rural Malnutrition Rehabilitation - Inpatient Therapeutic Care

Rural Malnutrition Rehabilitation takes services generally only available in large cities to remote areas where malnutrition begins. Working in partnership with the Uganda Ministry of Health the program is established inside an existing government health center. We provide inpatient medical treatment and nutritional therapy to children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Housing and meals are provided for caregivers who attend classes in nutrition, healthcare, and agriculture and optional biblical discipleship. Extensive follow-up care is provided through outpatient services and in home visits. The goal is to eliminate the need for inpatient treatment and help the community to develop sustainable methods of preventing and treating malnutrition.

Rural Malnutrition Rehabilitation takes services generally only available in large cities to remote areas where malnutrition begins. Working in partnership with the Uganda Ministry of Health the program is established inside an existing government health center. Weekly free clinics are provided where malnourished children from the community are evaluated by Ugandan medical professionals. Children that require inpatient care are admitted and others are enrolled in outpatient services and are seen every other week. Each clinic provides the family with nutritional support (RUTF), any necessary medications and supplements. Caregivers attend on site classes in Nutrition, health-care, agriculture and optional Bible study. The goal is to eliminate the need for inpatient treatment and help the community to develop sustainable methods of preventing and treating malnutrition.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The goal of Serving His Children is to come alongside the Uganda Government to create sustainable means of breaking the cycle of malnutrition in families and communities across Uganda.

Serving His Children is partnering with the Uganda Ministry of Health to bring nutrition services and life altering education to rural communities where malnutrition begins. By working inside with existing medical facilities and engaging local leadership we can change the health and habits of not only individual families, but whole communities and create sustainable change that can be replicated in more communities across Uganda.

RESTORE THE LIFE and health of the child
EMPOWER THE FAMILY to implement a long-term healthy diet and lifestyle
SUSTAIN THE COMMUNITY as they collectively address malnutrition
with their own solutions

We meet the objectives of these core values by:

1. PARTNERING WITH THE UGANDA MINISTRY OF HEALTH to implement EFFECTIVE Inpatient, Outpatient and Supplemental food services working through an existing government health facility and provide education for all families involved.

2. EQUIPPING LOCAL COMMUNITY LEADERS through intense training and user-friendly resources to prevent and manage malnutrition at the village level through education and resource management.

1. SUCCESSFUL TRACK RECORD: Serving His Children has a track record of success in the field of malnutrition. Since 2010 our team has provided treatment and education for over 4,000 children and families suffering from severe acute malnutrition with a success rate of over 97%.

2. PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL & NATIONAL GOVERNMENT: In 2017, we were invited by the government to partner with them to establish our successful model of care and education inside an existing health care facility in a rural community.

3. STRONG NATIONAL LEADERSHIP: 99% Ugandan led, our team is made up of many medical professionals, licensed social workers and a local pastor and supported by many Village Health Team members.

4. EFFECTIVE TEACHING: Education is the hallmark of all our programs. All curriculum is developed and taught by Uganda nationals

5. INTERNATIONALLY FUNDED: Serving His Children is 100% donor supported by an amazing team of individuals from all around the world.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

• Provided inpatient medical treatment and education to over 1,200 children with severe acute malnutrition
• Provided education and nutritional support to over 4,000 families through outpatient services
• Working with the MoH through local government, successfully established and maintain a high quality nutrition unit in a rural health
center
• Established team of 47 well trained and motivated VHT’s who engage communities in the district in health education and perform nutritional assessments
• Serving His Children was appointed to the District Nutrition Coordination Committee and is currently the lead of all Nutrition service provisions within Mayuge

WHATS NEXT?

As strong local leadership is developed and government hospital staff equipped, Serving His Children will gradually transfer responsibilities to a locally sustainable team. When our presence is reduced to the level of outside support, we will begin the process of beginning again in a different district.
