What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Problem statement: Due to the distractions inherent in busy lives, most people are unable to keep abreast of complex social and environmental issues and the solutions needed to address them, either individually or collectively. Exacerbating the issue is the fact that corporate-owned news media serves special interests rather than the common good, and our social divides keep us separated and ineffectual in comprehending the problems and harnessing solutions. High quality content that addresses numerous social and environmental issues exists yet can be difficult to find. Filmmakers and documentarians need support distributing their content to appropriate audiences who can take action and bring positive and compassionate change. Many educators are unaware of documentaries that provide excellent educational resources. With over 10,000 documentaries produced each year and hundreds of media channels available online, information overload is a common challenge.

Documentaries are powerful learning tools and most in our catalog have educational and community engagement resources aligned with multiple Global Goals. The catalog includes SDG targets, discussion guidelines, and educational resources such as an Educator and Community Toolkit which is ideal for communities wishing to learn about and implement the Goals. For students, educators and communities, we are featuring Microsoft Learning, #TeachSDGs and Gaia Education's SDG Flashcards.

Microsoft Learning calls the SDG's the "Worlds Greatest Lesson". Our combined resources offer insights into complex issues while inspiring with incentives and solutions. The resources give participants tools that connect them to a global community of educators, practitioners, and entrepreneurs who are pioneering change using a SDG framework.

Resources regarding the SDG $12 trillion business opportunity / potential 380 million job growth strategy for a renewed world economy by 2030 are also included. Companies that build SDGs into their corporate strategies can differentiate their performance giving them a competitive edge.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The mission of the Compathos Foundation is to "Provide support and development of educational and documentary materials for charitable projects around the globe to foster awareness of charitable works and encourage philanthropy".

Compathos is a media production, research and education organization harnessing the transformative power of the arts and media to inspire action. Compathos shares stories that inspire people to participate in bringing positive and compassionate change to the world.

We aim to:

1.) Build awareness around complex environmental and social issues through educational film documentaries and storytelling that inspires action.

2.) Encourage individual and community engagement around cause-related films by providing community engagement tool kits.

3.) Build awareness and education of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through educational documentaries, film catalogs, educational partnerships and other resources.

4.) Support artists, filmmakers, educators and nonprofit organizations engaged in highlighting important causes. Convey strategic insight and deliverable solutions for content producers, mission-driven organizations and networked movements.

Compathos Foundation builds awareness about complex environmental and social issues and solutions through our Compathos media-rich online publishing platform and Films for the Planet--an online streaming platform featuring the best in social and environmental films on demand.

Compathos (501c3) fulfills its mission to educate and inspire by producing award-winning films, student media expeditions, immersive and interactive media, as well as community and online events. Our community of award-winning creative professionals recognize the power of arts, media and entertainment as a dynamic force for transformation and social good. Our recent project, Films for the Planet is a streaming platform offering the best in environmental and social action films on demand. Members enjoy the highest quality content for social impact, perpetual learning and community engagement as well as real-time events that draw upon a network of luminary filmmakers, scholars and movement makers. Films for the Planet promotes globally connected storytelling that inspires generative discourse and positive action for the greater good.

We encourage individual and community engagement around cause-related films by providing community engagement tool kits. We connect people to films that will assist them on their journey as catalysts for social change. We carefully vet, curate and promote high-quality educational content that has proven impact.

We build awareness about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through educational documentaries, film catalogs, educational partnerships and resources.

We support media artists through our Fiscal Sponsorship program and provide strategic insight to help content producers and mission-driven organizations maximize and measure their media impact. Services include data harvesting and the creation of impact reports, data visualization and case studies to assist film campaigns in reporting on social impacts.

We support media students through our Media Internship Program and Media Expeditions. Through our Media Internship program, we mentor talented journalists and filmmakers by providing opportunities to work on media projects. Through our Student Media Expeditions we explore the intersection of new interactive documentary forms.

We have ten years of experience in arts and media production and in producing community screenings, film festivals and online events. We've worked with artists and filmmakers around the world in various capacities and have managed creative teams through virtual means, producing award-winning films, media expeditions and interactive/online media hubs that have reached hundreds of thousands internationally. We are familiar with the sphere of arts and philanthropy and regularly function in a "networked nonprofits" context.

We have vetted hundreds of films, stories and organizations and have developed key leadership relationships as well as a robust database of contacts. We have access to creative and committed talent across various domains including technology, strategic planning, creative arts, resource planning and development, finance and marketing. Notably, we have routinely relied on volunteer services as our primary resource in achieving our goals. Estimated market value for volunteer services are $1.2 million over a ten year period.

Films for the Planet's intent is to reverse engineer the film festival for the Digital Age. We blend streaming, on demand and community transformation technologies with new creative channels for networked storytelling and distribution. We’ve streamed dozens of free films during our online events while drawing upon a network of world-class filmmakers and scholars to inspire generative discourse and informed action. We’ve seen film create impact and ignite social movements time and again--we know the challenges, and we know that amazing things are possible!
