What we aim to solve
Zenviba Academy of Art and Science Inc. believes that knowledge is power, as it lifts people out of poverty and improves the quality of life and prosperity for both current and future generations. Our mission is to develop human capital in under-resourced communities by providing entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, art and math program initiatives. Since 2008, our high-quality ESTEAM programming has transformed and empowered 3,000 youths by broadening their knowledge base, improving their creative and critical thinking and academic performance.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Creative Holistic Art Integration "CHAI"
Our ESTEAM curriculum of entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, art and math is taught using the award-winning Creative Holistic Art Integrated (CHAI) methodology created by our Program Manager Rachel J. Hughes in collaboration with artists, teachers, mentors and academic performance professionals along with experts in all areas of the creative and healing arts to offer well rounded programs that develop our youth in body, mind and soul. CHAI incorporates multiple art forms and modalities in the learning process to stimulate right-brain and left-brain synchronization which amplifies cognition, enriches subject material, enhances participation, dramatically improves retention and the overall experience. CHAI improves creativity, critical thinking, leadership and career development skills, as well as environmental awareness.
Coding
Get into the Rhythm
Computer Science should be part of core curriculum starting in kindergarten. We use the award-winning Code.org online course in free, single-gender, hands-on classes for beginning coders and those preparing for IT careers.
Our Coding programs are delivered at iTech High School in Miami, FL and our mountain retreat in Asheville, NC.
Ready Pá La Calle
Ready for the Street
Ready Pá La Calle is our 12-week cultural exchange program where we further American values through music, art and dance. Dominican student participants travel to the US and take part in activities led by our professional Zenviba staff.
Our Ready Pá La Calle programs are delivered at iTech High School in Miami, FL.
CHAI Reading
Reading is Fundamental
The ability to read at grade level is a critical indicator of children’s future success in life. Prison populations in the US are disproportionately minority, as they are 2 times more likely to be sentenced to prison and serve significantly more time than their white counterparts. Overwhelming evidence shows a direct correlation between literacy and incarceration. Minorities who fail to read at grade level in the third grade are 4 times less likely to graduate from high school and 88% of federal and state prisoners did not graduate from high school. South Florida third grade reading levels are only 58%. Increasing literacy levels keeps children out of the criminal justice system.
Core Self-Esteem
Black history is world history! Our students discover the inspirational stories of black achievement from current individuals to those intentionally unrecognized for their significant contributions to mankind that are shamelessly overlooked in American history textbooks, where slaves are referred to as documented guest workers. By exposing black children to their rich and rightful place in world history, we have transformed and empowered their lives through self-awareness and self-esteem enhancement, broadened their knowledge base, interests, aspirations, sense of purpose, self-sufficiency and personal responsibility.
Our reading programs are delivered at iTech High School in Miami, FL.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Zenviba believes that it takes a village to raise a child, and thriving communities to build a prosperous nation. However, there is no community development without sustainable economic development. We take a holistic approach to urban renewal that addresses the total needs of each community. We maintain that when thoughtfully executed, it can eliminate gentrification, structural inequalities and artificial barriers; improve socio-economic conditions; foster innovation, job creation and environmental stewardship.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Bring Meaning to Your Investment
Zenviba seeks virtuous catalytic capital for our socially conscious and innovative philanthropic investment opportunities for sustainable economic development in underserved urban communities. Unfortunately, nationally foundations only fund 20% of the potential Program Related Investment (PRI) goals for their collective $43 billion annual distribution primarily due to the transaction cost associated with finding quality investments that don't jeopardize their charitable foundation status with the IRS. We can significantly improve these dismal numbers, as all of our investment opportunities are structured to meet Internal Revenue Service criteria for PRI's and Mission Related Investments (MRI).
Collaborative Effort Collective Impact
Communities that partner with Zenviba will be able to better leverage their public and private sector funding with private foundation PRI's, MRI's and private equity capital to deliver sustainable community development and social well-being. Foundations will decrease their risks associated with making these types of investments. Municipalities will permanently eliminate slum and blight. We provide scalable and replicable turn-key projects through innovative public-private partnerships as an agent for social transformation and sustainable community development. We produce a multiple bottom line outcome where everyone wins and the possibilities are unlimited.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Zenviba Academy is one piece of the Zenviba Ventureprises international Fourth Sector organization. We are in the process of capitalizing the Zenviba Academy through profits from our other entities. Overtime an endowment will be established to cover the operational expenses of the Academy. The Trustees are in the process of setting the 2018 budget.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Zenviba is just getting started and we have a long way to go. To date we have helped improve the lives of over 3,000 students in Miami. We are establishing our ReUNION program in the San Francisco School District, and hope to reach 10,000 students in 2018.
