What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Food Security
We donate posts, fencing, start-up seeds, basic gardening tools, and food gardening education to participating families. Those families receive all of this in exchange for agreeing to attend the initial multi-day training, meet with the Cedara College teachers monthly during the growing season, and, most importantly, agree to mentor and support four additional families the following year.
By teaching families how to garden successfully, and then making them responsible to teach other families, every garden we put in place is a step toward many more successful family food gardens. When we put in place a family garden, we give them everything they need to successfully provide for themselves and support their neighbors on an continuing basis.
But family food gardens alone will not bridge the nutrition gap in the village. We also plan to support the few communal gardens at the crèches and Drop-in center for orphans. These gardens are larger and can provide food for some of those who do not yet have any other access to a garden, or are unable to garden themselves. We can also use the gardens as an opportunity to teach the children and orphans how to grow food.
Education
There are two crèches (kindergartens) and one Primary School in iNzinga. There is also one Drop-in Center for OVC’s (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) to go to after school. They are staffed by very dedicated administrators and teachers, but they do not have the materials they need to help the children of iNzinga reach their potential.
We have already donated materials to one creche (ABC books, small motor skills development tools, etc.) and a laptop computer to the primary school. We will continue to work closely with local administrators and teachers to create a specific, prioritized list of materials that will have the most impact, and begin to provide those education materials as funding allows. We will require that there be specific plans or programs for all materials, and we will review their usage and the impact created.
Our goal is to provide more basic early learning exercises, and books for each crèche. We also plan to have a set of education materials for each grade of the primary school, and at least one new tool/program for the Drop-in Center each year.
Total materials planned for annual distribution are:
Two sets of early learning materials (one for each crèche)
Nine new primary school educational materials (one for each grade and the Drop-in Center)
We have partnered with Shuter & Shooter Publishers, Ltd., a leading South African publisher of quality education materials in English and Zulu languages. They are donating some education books to the Primary School in iNzinga, and we will purchase additional books from them as funding allows.
