Business Case for Breastfeeding

We are committed to assisting employers to support their breastfeeding employees. Please contact us if you are an employer who would like free assistance with drafting a short policy, setting up a lactation room, or just have questions about complying with the relevant laws. We are also here to help mothers balance working and breastfeeding.

Population(s) Served
Parents
Women and girls

Many Kansas businesses are already providing this level of access and comfort for their patrons. However, there are some businesses and employees that may be unaware of the current law. This can cause an awkward and embarrassing situation for the mother that is simply feeding her child. The campaign’s aim is for businesses to demonstrate their support for breastfeeding by making a commitment through a pledge, and then displaying a clearly visible English/Spanish bilingual window decal (English/Spanish table tents are also available).

Population(s) Served
Families
Parents

The Communities Supporting Breastfeeding is a designation recognizing communities that provide multifaceted breastfeeding support across several sectors: businesses, employers, hospitals, child care providers and peer support.

A two-hour training for child care providers, “How to Support Breastfeeding Mothers & Families” is available each month for FREE through Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities. Registration information HERE. This course will increase child care providers understanding of breastfed baby behavior and how to support the breastfeeding relationship, using the latest techniques and research. Graduates of the class can proudly display the “We Care for Breastfed Babies” window decal which will be provided along with a handy “Feeding Tips” reference card. The class has been approved for 2 clock hours of in-service training from KDHE.

Population(s) Served
Caregivers

The Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition, in partnership with Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Bureau of Family Health (Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Program) has created a FREE two (2) hour class for parents. The high-quality, highly visual, infant feeding class is available for FREE to anyone in Kansas and can be integrated into health departments, hospitals or community-based prenatal education classes. It is an evidence-based curriculum designed to educate families in a prenatal class setting about safe and optimal infant feeding and aligns with WIC, High 5 for Mom and Baby, and the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network messages and education related to parenting and maternity care practices

Data
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
