Mission

The Iraqi Mutual Aid Society (IMAS) is a Chicago-based, secular non-profit dedicated to providing long-term support services and building community for immigrants, asylees, and refugees. Although our multilingual and multicultural expertise is specialized to assist arrivals from Iraq and the Middle East, our doors are open to all immigrants, asylees, and refugees.

Refugee Child & Family Services

The Child & Family Services Program assists parents with issues involving their children’s education and development, in order to improve children’s outcomes in school and beyond. Our services:

• Assist parents with enrolling their children in preschool, elementary, middle, and high school
• Help parents to communicate with teachers and administration at schools
• Support students struggling in school and help to resolve any challenges in translation or adjustment
• Encourage parents to become advocates for their children through workshops and programming

Population(s) Served

The Adult Education Guidance program provides clients with counseling and technical assistance for any education or training sought beyond high school.
Adult education guidance services:

• Offer support and guidance for ESL class registration
• Develop long-term education and career plans
• Provide information about Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree programs and help complete college applications for chosen programs
• Assist with financial aid applications, including FAFSA
• Offer support and guidance for professional training programs, licenses, and certificates
• Evaluate American degree equivalents for degrees from international universities

Population(s) Served

Case Management Services provides guidance on adjustment and transition issues for clients and assistance with accessing safety net systems. Program services range from applications for health insurance and food stamps, to payment plans for utility bills and travel loans, to translation and interpretation, to job applications.

Population(s) Served

The Immigration Legal Clinic provides Department of Justice-recognized and accredited free legal services for immigrants and refugees, including Green Card Applications, Naturalization Applications, and Fee Waiver Applications. The clinic also assists with legal questions, follow- up on submitted applications, and referrals to low-cost immigration attorneys.

The Community Engagement Program organizes events, activities, outings, and workshops for clients to connect with each another, as well as their broader host community, through cultural, artistic, and informational programs.

• Organize cultural events and attend community festivals to forge connections with the broader Chicago area community
• Build support networks among clients through groups and activities, in order to share important information and build community
• Arrange skill building groups to provide opportunities for clients to fill in gaps in their integration into the U.S.
• Bring experts in a variety of topics to speak with IMAS clients at life skills and cultural orientation workshops in order to improve clients’ understandings of the systems and opportunities in Chicago
• Plan community service opportunities for clients, so that they become invested in the success of the community of IMAS and their neighbors
