Global Smiles Bosnia

Childhood caries is the most common chronic childhood disease in the world. The World Health Organization has set the global standard for diseased, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) among twelve-year olds at 3, a number met by almost 75% of countries globally.
In Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, the average twelve-year old shows an average of 4.5 affected teeth. This corresponds to the worst health statistics in the world.
Global Smiles Bosnia is a response to these alarming oral health care statistics. In the fall of 2009, our pilot study will bring school- and community-based oral health promotional campaigns to 4000 children in six months. Upon evaluation in the spring of 2010, GSI will launch a nation-wide program effectively reaching school-aged children and their families with preventive oral health education and care.
