OPS FEST: Break the Rules

aka OPS Fest   |   Portland, OR   |  www.opsfest.org

Mission

Original Practice Shakespeare Festival (OPS) is a professional theater company committed to bringing unpredictable and accessible Shakespeare for free to the widest possible audience. We implement the unrehearsed, improvisational performance techniques actually used in Shakespeare’s time. Creatively using gender-, color-, differently abled-, size- and age-conscious casting, OPS provides a completely unique perspective to the classic canon.

WILFest

At the heart of the summer, the WILFest will stage the company’s entire repertoire—19 plays with the additions of “Loves Labours Lost” and “Henry V”—in 4 consecutive weekends. This aligns with our mission in these ways:(1) audiences access their favorite plays and those lesser known, often in contemporary contexts; (2) local actors train in First Folio technique, a method of effectively performing Renaissance texts for contemporary audiences; (3) actors experiment in a wide range of roles playing across gender identities, that traditional single-play runs do not allow in a career; (4) promote research in the field of Original Practices, being the only company in the US employing 16th-century scheduling.
