ARTPRIZE GRAND RAPIDS

aka ArtPrize   |   Grand Rapids, MI   |  www.artprize.org

Mission

ArtPrize is an open, independently organized international art competition which takes place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It celebrates artists working in all mediums from anywhere in the world, and is open to any creative with an artwork to enter and a venue willing to host it. For 18 days, art is exhibited throughout the city in public parks and museums, in galleries and vacant storefronts, in bars and on bridges. ArtPrize awards $450,000 directly to artists, through grants to support their ambitious work and through prizes which the public decides through the ArtPrize mobile app.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Community Engagement Programs

Volunteer Programming — ArtPrize's volunteer program exists to enrich the lives of community members of Grand Rapids and support arts culture as it is present here, nationally and globally.  Our goal is to create accessibly and educational opportunities for public engagement in ArtPrize.

Seasonal Internship Programming — the ArtPrize internship program allows college students in the community to work closely with the full-time ArtPrize team to better understand how ArtPrize works and accept responsibility for a project that will benefit their professional experience.

Artist Engagement — Like public engagement, artist engagement is central to the ArtPrize Mission and Guiding Principles. ArtPrize Education Days has been a core program in which artists engage with local students, along with staff of cultural organization partners, to deliver educational experiences aligned with the National Core Arts Standards as well as integrated State of Michigan grade-level standards like English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Furthermore, each winter, ArtPrize and its partners conduct a series of round tables and artist/curator development sessions known as “Break It Down, Make It Better” to determine how the artist experience can be improved each year.
