Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our roller derby league was greatly affected by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in 2020 and our first quarter of 2021. We were unable to open for roller derby training, host public events, nor earn revenue. As a result, our membership and sponsorship greatly declined, while we continued to pay the rent for our practice facility. We will rebuild our league as the state and county restrictions are lifted and look forward to returning to full-contact roller derby within the guidelines established by our sport's governing body, the WFTDA.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
FNP
Every year we feature another local non-profit, and donate to the organization at the end of the year. We are consistently trying to up our budget for this every year. For example, for the past two years, we have partnered with the Santa Cruz SPCA.
Roller Derby
We serve the women's (inclusive of transgender, intersex, and gender-expansive) WFTDA roller derby community with members residing in 4 counties in the Bay Area - Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, and Monterey. We train our athletes from Boot Camp to Developing B/C and Top-15 WFTDA ranked teams. We also serve our skating and non-skating officials by providing training and continuing education for their WFTDA officiating certification paths.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
SCDG strives to create a full-contact sport that inspires girls and women, and that appeals to the fans in our community. We will work to be fully sponsored and financially sound to create our own practice and game space and provide funding for travel, uniforms, and equipment for SCDG league members. As a nonprofit organization, SCDG will endeavor to give any net profits back to the community via donations to charities and nonprofit organizations.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
For the 2021 season, our rebuilding strategies include reevaluating our policies to make sure they are inline with our value of diversity and inclusiveness and forming a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee to oversee these changes. We are in the process of rebranding our image with a new name (DBA Santa Cruz Roller Derby) and logo. We are providing league members with scholarships and reduced membership fee during our league closure due to COVID restrictions.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are actively creating a DEI committee and currently utilize our derby ambassadors, also called DAMs: Should a League Member have an issue that falls within the structure of the League (such as overhearing gossip, witnessing a Code of Conduct violation, or experiencing a personal conflict with another League Member), they may contact a Derby Ambassador (DAM) to discuss the matter confidentially. Derby Ambassadors are members of the League (Skater, DDH, Official) elected to act in this capacity for a one-year term. There should be three to five DAMs at any given time. DAMs will receive some type of training in conflict resolution mediation skills and nonviolent communication. DAMs will maintain confidentiality and act in an ethical manner at all times. DAMs are to remain neutral in the resolution process; if they find they cannot, or that they have a conflict of interest, they will step aside and request that another DAM handle the situation.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since the inception of our League, we have donated over $40,000 to other local non-profits and have given over 2,000 hours of volunteer time. In 2018, we donated $1500.00 to the Homeless Garden Project. In 2019, we donated $2,000 to the Santa Cruz SPCA along with participating in volunteer events and providing them platforms to promote their organization at our games. We empower youth by cooperating and sharing resources with our sister league, Santa Cruz Derby Groms.
The athletes in our sport were ranked number 15 in the world of Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) at the sport's latest ranking in March 2020.
