Honolulu, HI   |  http://www.seainspiration.org/

Mission

We want to inspire more healing on and for our blue planet. Oceans and sea life are suffering from pollution, warming, and overall degradation. At the same time, many people in the world are working through challenging physical or emotional conditions. Our mission at Sea Inspiration is to bring healing to people and the sea by sharing positive, healing, and inspiring ocean experiences.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Like you, we are concerned about the state of our planet and the well-being of our fellow humans.

We see the pollution and exploitation of our oceans—and we find it unacceptable. We see people who need education about the plight of the sea because they don't understand what we—as a society—are doing to the salty waters that sustain all of us.

We see people dealing with pain and frustration; children with disabilities and diseases; wounded US service members seeking to heal-up and move on with their lives.

These are the problems we are working to address.

We see these things and remain determined to make a positive difference when & where humans and the sea intersect. There are many things going wrong in the world—but also many ways to fix them - by working together.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

My Beach Report

My Beach Report (MBR) is an educational sea adventure show hosted by students, for students, to help them SEE the SEA—and inspire them to get active.

MBR focuses on educating kids about our earth's marine environment and inhabitants. Through this programming we emphasize environmental stewardship, and teach students how each of them can make a valuable impact for marine ecosystems.

Why this, and why now? Because knowledge is power.

Through MBR, young people are learning how small changes made in their own lives—and their positive impact on sea life—will promote a healthier marine environment.

My Beach Report programming also includes expert advisors and educators, such as world-renowned marine scientists Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Richard Grigg, and Dr. Anthony Andrady.

Population(s) Served

Our Healing Adventures program uses experiences in and near the sea to help (and inspire!) people of all ages who face significant personal challenges.

We encourage everyone to spend time in the sea(!), but through this program we focus our efforts on two specific groups of people: children with severe or terminal illness and US military personnel/veterans wounded while serving their country.

What we do through Healing Adventures is offer participants an experience of freedom and joy unlike anything most of them have ever had. In a fun, supportive atmosphere, adults and children alike can "spread their wings” and enjoy feelings of exhilaration and confidence as they experience ocean adventures such as surfing, paddling, snorkeling, canoeing, and swimming with marine wildlife. The watery environment we share with most of them is akin to a "healing tonic,” especially in the warm Hawaiian ocean...and whether they adventure on land or sea—they’ll leave with a fresh, hopeful, healing perspective.

Although we are a sea-focused organization, depending on the needs (and wants!) of our recipients, we sometimes arrange adventures that are not in the ocean. However, being in Hawaii, we are always surrounded by healing waters! For example, we may offer horseback riding, zip-line rides, or some of our wounded service members may even have the option of skydiving with our military spokesman, Colonel John Bates, U.S.M.C. (Ret.), and his professional skydiving team "the Flying Leathernecks”!

Your Sea Inspiration team knows that being outdoors in or near the ocean offers a therapeutic benefit for most people. We know, because we have felt it personally. Our goal through Healing Adventures is to share similar opportunities with others and help them gain whatever healing benefits are possible from the sea and nature.

Sea Inspiration does a great deal of filming in and around the sea.

We do this because we want you to see the sea and its beauty. We want to help you understand how the sea can help heal humanity (& vice versa). And we want to inspire you to become an active force for educating others and protecting the seas for future generations.

To help oceans and people, we use our footage in a variety of ways, from "My Beach Reports” to filming our Healing Adventures outings. We share our videos and photos far and wide, educating and inspiring the world—just as we are doing with you here and now!

Our video works its magic a number of ways, including:

AquaKids TV Show: Exciting news! Sea Inspiration is joining the AquaKids TV show for the 2017-18 season. We will have a 2-3 minute segment of Sea Inspiration footage in each of the 15 episodes. AquaKids 2017 hits the airwaves in October, so be sure to check your local listings at that time.

Public Service Announcements, Documentaries, and Plain Ol’ Beautiful Videos!

Since 2000, your Sea Inspiration team (especially our Founder, Ray!) has produced documentaries and Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about ocean conservation issues and shared them throughout the world.

Our PSAs are designed to grab the attention of viewers (especially today’s youth) with the goal of helping them become effective stewards of our marine environment. For example, our PSAs often contain animated characters who interact with live actors in an ocean environment.

Previous topics include:

♣ Marine mammal entanglement due to sea debris such as lobster traps and abandoned fishing nets.
♣ Plastic rubbish and toxins in our environment and their devastating effects on our streams, lakes, rivers, and oceans.
♣ Expansion of preserves to allow for improved marine environmental health and species recovery.

Multimedia Distribution Sites:
¥ From 2009 to 2016: Ocean in Google Earth (the platform reached over one billion subscribers).

¥ US Military Networks in Hawaii, Japan, and Italy reaching more than 110,000 servicemen and women.

¥ Sea Inspiration content is donated to children's hospitals, schools, after school programs, and other youth/healing/US military facilities throughout the United States and abroad.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

From a high-level perspective, we aim to inspire people toward a world in which people respect the ocean, understand and benefit from the healing it offers, and are better protectors of the sea for its own sake - and for ours.

We seek to establish broad educational programs about ocean conservation and the benefits of being in and near the sea. We will also expand our Healing Adventures program to get more people with serious medical/emotional conditions into the healing waters of the ocean.

To achieve our objectives, we currently:
• Provide healing, sea-related adventures for wounded US military personnel (active, veteran, and/or retired); people with developmental, emotional, and/or medical disabilities; and children diagnosed with terminal illnesses.
• Document the healing sea experiences we offer, and use our movies to inspire and educate - so others can see the sea healing.
• Educate people—especially children and young adults—about a wide variety of marine conservation issues and what they can do to help.
• Produce ocean education/conservation-themed films of all lengths.
• Distribute Sea Inspiration films and collateral materials to Veterans Administration facilities, children's hospitals, hospices, and similar entities.
• Engage and empower people of all ages to create an inspiring impact for people, ocean ecosystems, marine life, and future generations of all species.

We have a small group of core volunteers and active Board members, and we have excellent working relationships with for- and non-profit entities—as well as government and military representatives. We also have a small but growing group of financial supporters.

Having done this work since 2009, we are experienced at operating all of our programs and “making things happen" in general.

We are now in the process up growing our capacity and increasing the scale and impact of our work.

We have served many US service members and young people facing medical and emotional challenges...but the need is currently greater than our ability to deliver.

Having recently changed our legal/organizational name, refined our programs, created a new logo and web site, and generally "brought our house into better order," we are hungry to accomplish more.

Now that we have reinvented and reinvigorated ourselves, the real work of serving others--and protecting the seas begins.

We live near the sea. We remain inspired by the sea. We intend to help others become involved aware of and involved in the important work of Sea Inspiration.
