Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The financial burdens of the cancer journey can be summarized in Direct (29%) and Indirect (61%) costs. These mounting indirect costs are not budgeted or planned for, and can drive a patient/family to financial, emotional and physical bankruptcy. whether they are cured or not. Friday Harbour relieves the temporary housing burdens (costs) by providing free lodging for patients and families during their treatments. We call this “Healing Cancer One Night At A Time"! To date we have provided over 2800 nights saving families millions of dollars. We raise awareness of the need. raise funds. and pay for lodging, allowing the family to rest, retool and face the journey ahead.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Friday Harbour will focus annually on four main goals.
- Execute three unique fundraising events during the calendar year. Event program is aimed at broadening our brand of "Healing Cancer," educating community on the roadblocks to "cancer treatment" and building up a national network, resulting in a contact network of 10,000 people, $350,000 in funds and brand exposure across a collaborative of other nonprofits.
- Provide a minimum of 1,200 nights of lodging in Houston during each calendar year.
- Recruit and maintain a Friday Beacons donor society of 100 donors annually.
- Build a program around convening the small business community and other nonprofits to deliver several collaborative events.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
- Recruit and maintain an executive board and directors with specific skillsets and resources to grow our mission, expand our reach to five cities, and create long-term operational efficiency and impact.
- Develop a communication and marketing strategy aimed at exposing the risks associated with Roadblocks to Cancer treatment for patients and families (interactive web and social media presence).
- Develop a collaborative culture within Friday Harbour that attracts other nonprofits and allows for us to execute one key collaborative event annually. Focus on resource sharing and support of each other's cause as we create awareness of the roadblocks.
- Execute a Friday Beacon fundraising society aimed at keeping donors engaged on the impact they are making monthly to patient and families through their support.
- Build an intentional fundraising strategy focused on Small Business Community, Collaboration focused grants and hospitality services (Charity Field Day, Corporate Festivals, FH Classic and Movember Golf Tournaments, Harbours Around Houston, Home & Away Healing Experience)
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Linkage to Social Workers and Participating Hospitals (We will strengthen our partnerships with Marriott and Holiday Inn).
Funding sources that drive our organization include: Foundational Grants, Corporate Giving and individual donors through our Friday Beacon program.
Working Executive Board of Directors who oversee the operations.
Passionate group of leaders who have personal connection to the mission. Executive Board members include:

J. C. Giron , Vice President
Annette Andrews, Secretary
Deborah Neville, Treasurer
Barbara Hamer, Director of Housing
Aaron Cervantes, Director Beacon Donors

We have a new online system to streamline our reporting and data. This will allow us to track immediate KPIs and communicate successes more efficiently.
We have a "working executive board" and continue to fill key roles, allowing us to leverage their skills and reach for immediate impact to our goals
We are creating a "needs based" recruiting strategy for board and director positions. These positions may not be traditional, but will focus on filling critical resource gaps to support Friday Harbour's unique and simple (not easy) mission. (Hospitality, Strategist, Social Work, Festival Planner, Project Managers).
Creation of a media committee (Social Media intern, Web Developer, Press Secretary, Sales Leaders). We have relationships with and direct access to television, production and media companies. (Fox, Lopez Negrete, HHCC, City of Houston, KHOU, KCOH).
We have a strong connection to the Small Business and Nonprofit communities through servant leaders, organizational executives. And we have our 2016 Charity Field Day experience.
We are bringing onboard an intern to develop our social media strategy.
We have a growing link to a large community of funders, individual givers through our Harbours Around Houston program, Charity Field Day and current Beacon Donor program that we can leverage.
