"You Wouldn't Expect"

The play, You Wouldn't Expect, is specific to how the practice of eugenics and pervasive racial and socioeconomic attitudes and practices shaped the lives of five women in North Carolina in the mid-1960s. We agree with our playwright, Marilynn Barner Anselmi, as quoted in the New Pittsburgh Courier (May 6, 2016): "I'm still shocked that people still don't know about this. I'm convinced it is because the victims were primarily poor black women. I wanted to give voice to the people that this affected. I wanted the audience to think about this and learn about this and start a dialog.” We believe these women’s stories of struggle, dignity, and truth will touch our audience and spark their awareness of the echoes between past and present.
