Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We are working to address this issue of homeless animals in the Central Valley. Shelters in the Central Valley currently have one of the highest euthanasia rates in the United States. We are also working to address the lack of education about responsible pet ownership in the Central Valley.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Volunteer Program
Animal Compassion Team has a volunteer program for people interested in becoming involved in the organization. Volunteers attend an orientation where they learn about ACT, spaying/neutering pets, volunteer opportunities, and what they are expected to do when they volunteer. Volunteer opportunities include: marketing, adoption agent, dog walker, cat cuddler, foster parent, and transporter.
Foster Program
Fostering is a wonderful opportunity to open your heart and home to a pet in need. It allows for some of our most needy animals to get the care and attention they need to blossom. Foster homes also provide a safe place for vulnerable puppies to socialize and grow.
Adoption Program
Animal Compassion Team has many wonderful pets up for adoption! Our Sofia Adoption Center is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays from 11-4 (excluding holidays) and weekdays by appointment.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We aim to rescue and help place homeless animals in the Central Valley. We also aim to educate the public about responsible pet ownership with an emphasis on spaying/neutering, proper identification and preventative care. We are also partnering with our sister shelter Fresno Humane towards the goal of making Fresno County a no-kill community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
ACT rescues dogs and cats from local shelters on a daily basis. We also take in pets that members of our community are unable to keep for various reasons. We have adoption events out at our local PetSmart and at our Sofia Adoption Center every weekend where the public can come find a new family member. We provide education through community events, conversations with community members who are looking to adopt or seeking advice, and phone conversations. ACT also placed a bid for the county animal services contract in 2015, with the understanding that we would create a separate organization to provide animal control services. Our bid was accepted and we founded Fresno Humane animal services- our sister shelter. Before Fresno Humane, the previous provider had a euthanasia rate of about 80%. Thanks to Fresno Humane, the euthanasia rate is now only about 10%. ACT will continue to partner with other organizations to work towards making the Central Valley a no-kill community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
ACT has a facility, our Sofia Adoption Center, that was expanded in 2017. Our facility allows us to house rescue animals and facilitate adoptions. We now have a small staff that cares for the animals and approximately 100 dedicated volunteers. ACT also has many valuable partnerships with veterinary, shelter and rescue partners that help us work towards meeting our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
ACT has saved over 10,000 animals since we began in 2009. We helped found and support the organization that has drastically reduced Fresno County's euthanasia rate. We have also partnered with countless organizations to help save additional animal's lives. We run an adoption center and do weekly off-site adoption events as well a special events. In the future, we plan to continue to expand our education and life-saving programs.
