We all need connection. That’s why we exist, and it’s why we’ve been serving children and families. For over 23 years, KVC Kentucky has provided an array of mental and behavioral health, substance abuse and child welfare services that target problems families face. We help people experiencing mental health distress with caring treatment so they can embrace their worth, build resilience and thrive. We provide 24/7/365 support to children who have experienced abuse and neglect, and partner with caring relatives and foster families so they can heal from unimaginable trauma. We work to find children forever families through adoption. We help people who long for more in life by giving them a path to experience the joy of parenthood and helping children. KVC Kentucky positively impacts the lives of over 12,000 children and more than 3,000 families each year by providing behavioral health services and family preservation services aimed at safely preventing the need for foster care.

Family First Prevention and Reunification Services

KVC Kentucky’s Family First Prevention & Reunification Services help strengthen families and keep children safely at home. This work is in collaboration with DCBS, funded via state and federal. Referrals are made by DCBS; eligibility requires a family to have an open case with the Cabinet for Health & Family Services.

Services are available to children at risk for out-of-home placement or reunifying to long-term placement from foster care.

KVC has 12 offices and provides services in 9 regions and 77 counties.

KVC’s innovative, evidence-based Behavioral Health Services are delivered virtually and in client’s homes and communities. Services include assessment, diagnosis, and developing plans for care that utilize Evidence Based treatment. Our Board Certified Child Psychiatrist and APRN are available to meet with clients in our Lexington office, as well as seven sites across Kentucky.

Our skilled and professional Master’s level therapists and case managers are trained to treat children, teens and adults in their natural environment with interventions targeted at their specific needs. KVC professional staff are trained in a number of industry leading evidence-based practices which will structure the individualized approach given to each patient.

KVC uses a service team approach with each patient to develop a collaborative care plan, which is designed to help children live successfully at home and in the community and adults leverage their support system as much as possible.

Almost 40% of American teens are impacted by Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Over half of those who experience substance abuse also have a co-occuring mental health disorder.

KVC’s treatment philosophy is individual and family centered, strengths-based, and team oriented with individuals and their families actively engaged in treatment planning and treatment decisions. Our SUD program provides comprehensive wraparound services to meet the needs of individuals and families. KVC’s Case Management team help increase natural supports in schools, communities and homes to promote positive changes in environment and habits.

Family involvement is key in teen SUD treatment. Providing in-home services helps to decrease the barriers for family participation. KVC’s success is rooted in recognizing need for a robust continuum of care with access to all needed levels of care to meet the treatment needs.

KVC is proud to partner with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and Jefferson County DCBS in serving children and families in Louisville, the state’s largest city.

KVC’s Referral and Support Services is an innovative public-private partnership designed to provide support to DCBS in completing family assessments, connecting families with needed community services and resources, and strengthening safety, permanency and well-being of at-risk children and families.

This unique team-based approach allows families to receive support from both KVC and DCBS in concluding their child welfare involvement and offering referral linkages or services including behavioral health, substance abuse treatment, recovery supports, medical services, pediatric care, and academic services. KVC is implementing evidence-based risk assessment and consultation tools in order to better understand the complex, unique risk and safety needs of families served by Jefferson County DCBS.

Improving the health and wellbeing of youth occupies the very core of KVC Kentucky’s mission to meet mental health, educational, and intensive behavioral and emotional support needs of high-risk youth and families. Youth coming into KVC Kentucky face multiple adverse childhood experiences including abuse, neglect, homelessness and exposure to violence that deepen the potential for difficult life outcomes.

KVC Kentucky has many goals. Our primary goal is to enrich and enhance the quality of life children, adolescents, families and individuals in our communities. The welfare of a child cannot wait, and it is our ultimate goal to keep children and families safely together.

Another goal we embody is to empower youth in crisis who have experienced extreme trauma throughout their young lives to become more resilient, confident and contributing members of society. This ultimate goal defines the legacy of our success and lasting, meaningful change for youth, their families and communities. To help youth and families reach for their goals, KVC Kentucky provides evidence-based practices in a trauma-informed environment.

When a child has suffered abuse or neglect, or when a family is facing a mental health challenge, KVC Kentucky is there with the support needed to move through difficult times. KVC is a private, nonprofit child welfare organization that provides a diverse array of services including family preservation, foster care, substance use disorder treatment, and behavioral healthcare services. We are committed to enriching and enhancing the lives of Kentucky children and families.

Our vision is to provide leadership in behavioral healthcare, social services, and professional education through the provision of service delivery models with proven quality and fiscal accountability.

KVC Kentucky strategies to meet goals and objectives while ensuring the quality of our care includes a multi-layered approach to person-centered health and wellness. One of our strategies is the joining together of two fields often treated as separate. This approach unlocks the potential of individuals and communities to experience greater health and wellness.

The first field in our approach is leading the way in integrated healthcare. With KVC’s expertise in behavioral health, we help people experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, feelings of violence, substance abuse and addiction, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, and the effects of childhood traumatic stress. Our services include in-home therapy and skill-building, education and support, and substance abuse/addiction support. The latest neuroscience tells us that early childhood brain development and the trauma they experienced as children affects an individual’s mental health and physical health into adulthood and throughout their lives. Our solutions work on addressing the whole person first then expand to also include the individual’s environment and community.

The second field is child welfare/social services. We help ensure that children are safe and that families have the support they need to successfully care for their children. Services include in-home support to keep families safely together with family preservation services, and through family reunification services. KVC looks beyond physical health to understand root causes related to childhood adversity and relationships. Families have needs all along the continuum of care. Whether their need is for a low level of intervention (e.g., prevention, education), or their need is acute/complex, needing intervention and/or hospitalization, KVC is ready to help. By improving care and innovating where different fields intersect, we make a lasting impact in the lives of children and families.

Keeping families and children together is accomplished by providing comprehensive and compassionate medical and behavioral healthcare, social services and education to our clients. Our services are in-home, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and driven by a focus on the safety, permanency, and wellbeing of the child and family. Our work with the children and families of Kentucky is enhanced by continuous quality improvement. We value dignity, respect, honesty and integrity. KVC Kentucky is uniquely positioned to accomplish our mission for children in our care and their families. We work diligently to meet the needs of children and secure assistance of service providers to ensure service integration. To avoid duplication of service, we work closely with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and other organizations to develop community-based services for the betterment of children and families. We are committed to enriching and enhancing the lives of Kentucky children and families.

KVC has a rich 23-year history of service provision in Kentucky and our work with the children and families is enhanced by continuous quality improvement. At KVC Kentucky, there is a strong emphasis in the therapeutic implementation of evidence-based therapy, assessments and programs. We value dignity, respect, honesty and integrity. We deliver our innovative and effective services in a culturally-sensitive manner, respectful of a child and family’s strengths and values.

KVC Kentucky is accredited by The Joint Commission, which is considered the gold standard in healthcare. Our more than 200 passionate, dedicated staff provide services across 77 out of 120 counties to help strengthen the lives of individuals and families each day.

KVC Kentucky is a proud member of the Kentucky chapter of the Children’s Alliance. The organization is a subsidiary of KVC Health Systems which directly touches the lives of over 60,000 children each year in five states and Washington, D.C.

Each year, KVC Kentucky serves 12,000+ children and families in eight regions of the state. Our services are in-home, strengths-based, and driven by a focus on the safety, permanency, and wellbeing of the child and family.

In 2022, KVC Kentucky has positively impacted children and families in many ways including:

• 7,031 children in 3,091 families received family preservation services aimed at safely preventing the need for foster care
• 94% of children safely remained with or reunited with their families after receiving family preservation and reunification services
• 2,873 children in 1,401 families were served through our innovative Jefferson County child welfare services partnership with the Commonwealth
• 2,676 children were safely prevented from entering foster care
• 978 children and adults benefited from behavioral health services

During the devastating historic floods that hit Kentucky in 2022, KVC staff (some who lost everything they owned), worked round-the-clock to ensure children and families in their care were safe, had shelter, food, basic needs, and mental healthcare and therapy they needed. Additionally, during
the COVID-19 pandemic many organizations had to pause services, however KVC Kentucky never closed our doors and continually provided services and support for all of the children in our programs, and their families.
