What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Costa Rica: Community Action Alliance
Education Equals Hope is partnering with Community Action Alliance, CAA, located in San Ramon, Costa Rica.
Children from poverty-stricken families are required to have school supplies, and special uniforms and shoes in order to attend public school in Costa Rica. This volunteer-run scholarship project has been operated by CAA since 2013. The goal is to support 25 to 30 public school students until high school graduation, and 1 university social worker student in the San Ramon area who serves as an administrative program intern. In 2022, the youngest students from the original class of students are graduating high school; in total, 20 students will have graduated by December 2022, and two university scholarship program interns have earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Social Work.

Haiti: Les Cayes
Les Cayes is a seaport city located in southwestern Haiti. Including outlying areas, the population is approximately 52,000 people. It is roughly 120 miles (4 - 6 hour or more drive) from the capital city of Port-au-Prince, the primary source of its food and supplies.
Kindergarten and primary school tuition/fees generally range from $150 – $500 USD; secondary school ranges from $200-800 USD each year. Since over 70% of Haitians do not have regular jobs, paying for anything outside of survival essentials is difficult. Many of these families make less than $3 per day.
Education Equals Hope’s program in Les Cayes provides financial sponsorship for the remainder of tuition and fees that a student’s family cannot afford to pay. This amount varies based on the grade level, type of school and each family’s financial situation. Our onsite staff meets with parents, guardians and young adult students at the beginning of each school year to assess their level of need for assistance to pay.
Haiti: Cavaillon
Cavaillon is located in a flat plain region of southwestern Haiti on the road to Les Cayes, approximately 100 miles from Port-au-Prince. E=H’s program is located in Anotte, a rural area a few rocky and dusty miles outside of Cavaillon. More than 90% of people in Anotte live on less than $1 USD per day with limited access to drinking water and no electricity, sewage systems or medical facilities.
E=H funds the majority of the budget for Ecole St Esprit, a private school with over 300 students and a feeding program for three levels of preschool and primary grades 1 through 9. In addition, E-H coordinates health education workshops, women’s programs and a Vacation Bible School program for approximately 200 children each summer.
E=H also offers support for approximately 25 orphaned students pursuing higher education.
Haiti: Savanette
Savanette is located in rural southwest Haiti about 6 miles northwest of the coastal town of Les Cayes. An eight classroom building for St. Jean Baptiste School was completed in 1990, giving children in the Savanette area their first opportunity to attend school!
The school partnership which transitioned to Education Equals Hope in 2016, centers on providing a quality education in a safe and loving setting for primary students grades 1 – 6 and preschool classes for ages 3, 4 and 5.
The generosity of our donors supports not only academic expenses like salaries, textbooks and classroom supplies, but also a meal each school day for all students. Sadly, this is the only meal many students will eat that day. Just as proper nutrition is pivotal to the health and development of these students, so too does the meal aid their ability to focus in the classroom.
Two programs help strengthen the community. A goat program provides a sustainable source of food and income with SJBS orphans the first to receive a goat. Wonderful donors made it possible to give 11 goats and 50 pair of chicken to students in February 2017 to help replace animals lost in Hurricane Matthew (Oct 2016). In 2012, St. Jean Baptiste organized a micro-finance program with business education and loan components to help adults create an income generating business and provide for their families.
The school now offers classes through 11th grade with the cost for these upper grades being funded by student tuition. This is a huge success story for the community!
Rwanda: Blessing School for the Visually Impaired
Children with visual impairment and other disabilities in developing countries like Rwanda face enormous challenges. At best, they are sent to a government school with sighted children in classes of up to 100 students. At worst, they are neglected and sent out to beg, seen as a burden to the family instead of as uniquely talented individuals that can thrive and have productive and meaningful lives. There is a higher incidence of blindness in children (and adults) in developing countries because of inadequate medical facilities and lack of treatment.
BSVI officially opened its doors on January 26, 2015 with 7 students and now serves 15 students in grades Primary 1 through Primary 3 (the Rwandan school year goes from January to October). The school started with a small number of students, and more are added as the school becomes more established to carefully implement the plans and develop an effective institution before opening its doors to more students. BSVI is currently renting a facility, but would like to buy land to build its own building. All of the children live at the school because of the challenge of daily transportation from the rural areas. This also gives the school the opportunity to teach the children how to manage themselves with more independence.
Kenya: Whatever Is Pure
The Shekinah Glory Missions Center began in 2008 to care for orphans and vulnerable children. It is located in Kitale in Kenya (East Africa). In addition to English and Kiswahili, there are 42 tribal languages spoken across the country. Education in Kenya becomes very expensive after eighth grade, so many poor and orphaned children cannot continue their studies.
Whatever Is Pure, WIP, was a nonprofit Organization founded by Tracy Slusarski, however had to close WIP in December 2016 and joined E=H so she can continue to give hope to children in Kenya.
E=H offers feeding programs, salaries and school supplies in Kenya. After 14 years in existence, the program now supports 550 orphans, 320 high school students, 15 abandoned babies, and 17 college students.
We do this by:
• Providing one healthy meal a day to students through our feeding programs
• Sponsoring programs for street kids to be given a chance to be educated
Uganda Family Spirit
Family Spirit Children Centre was established in 2002 by a group of volunteers living with HIV/AIDS. Children are impacted the most when a family member dies of HIV/AIDS – it is common for these children to become the head of their household. The centre offers the following services for children impacted by HIV/AIDS: HIV/AIDS care and support, education, advocating, promoting and protecting OVC/PHA Rights, Environmental protection, advancing gender equality and sustainable livelihood initiatives among OVC/PHA.

Equity strategies
Last updated: 11/17/2022GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more
- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
