A Broken Umbrella Theatre

An all-volunteer company, ABUT creates all original work based on stories and figures from New Haven's past and present to celebrate our great city. The places for the productions are in non-traditional spaces that are connected to the story being told. The spaces are rehabbed by the ensemble and then given back to their owner for increased use and rents.Past works include (but not limited to):EXCHANGE (inspired by the first telephone exchange invented by George Coy and performed on a mobile stage as part of City Wide Open Studios 2017) Gilbert the Great (based on the life of AC Gilbert , performed at Erector Square)Freewheelers (the rise of the bicycle was the demise of the corset, performed in the former Horowitz Bros. Dept Store warehouse)Vaudevillian (about a notorious Westville murder, the first performance at what would become Lyric Hall)Play With Matches (Ebeneezer Beecher and the Diamond Match Company, performed in the boiler room of 446A Blake St across from the site of the original Diamond Match Company)
