According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2014, there were 3.8 million Veterans with a service-connected disability rating. Of this number, 1.1 million had a rating of 70 percent or higher. Additionally, there are thousands of other Veterans and first responders who have non-service-connected injuries or currently have a disability. Some of these include: blindness, hearing loss, amputated or loss of use of limbs; spinal cord injuries; traumatic brain injuries; or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Puppy Raising Program

Obtaining suitable canine candidates, recruiting volunteer foster homes to raise and care for puppies, providing veterinary care and supplies for puppies in program, providing support to volunteer puppy raisers, providing group and individual instruction to volunteer puppy raisers to aid them in raising and training their service puppy candidates.

Providing professional training to service dog candidates who have completed the puppy program, including housing, veterinary care, and supplies for service dog candidates.  Meeting or exceeding all applicable training standards defined as industry best practices and required for accreditation.

In many cases, service dogs can significantly improve quality of life and help to restore independence to a person with a disability.
The positive impact service dogs have on individuals who are disabled is well-documented (Hall, MacMichael, Turner, Mills, 2017) . A service dog not only assists with physical tasks that may be difficult or impossible for a person with a disability to accomplish, but also can perform tasks to assist with mental health challenges.
