What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Garden Guides
Garden Guides are Unity staff who help garden visitors navigate the garden through the peak harvest season; finding food, tasting, enjoying the goats and chickens or just exploring. Guides help individualize programming so families and children can enjoy our edible parks while maintaining safety. Being 5 generations displaced from the farm, many people who visit the Unity Gardens do not know how to harvest food, identify plants, etc. Garden Guides are in the garden from 10am to 9pm most of the summer!
Internships
Unity Gardens invests in future generations through engaging young adults in the organizational functions. The Unity Gardens internship caters to a variety of students; each of whom participate in all aspects of the daily and weekly routine regardless of their expertise or focus. Once well acclimated to the culture and functions of Unity Gardens, each intern has the opportunity to identify and focus on an area if particular interest. Previous interns have: built greenhouses, established childrens' programs, written grants, run new off site farmer's markets, developed curriculum, made art in the garden, run a fund raiser, planned and held an event,, painted a "Unity" vehicle, designed a meditation garden, sold CSA's, made new products, designed new educational gardens, written news releases, etc.
Unity Gardens free pick Gardens
Unity Gardens' open gardens are free pick for everyone. For over 10 years, our dignified free food experience has been serving our area providing food security and enriching and peaceful places. Our 30-50 gardens are completely open so that everyone can enjoy healthy, locally grown fresh produce without barriers. Because we have open gardens, like edible parks, where everyone is welcome, the gardens nourish the body and the soul! Th eflagship garden at laSalle Square is a 7 acre urban ecosystem that includes goats, chickens, beehives, pollination gardens, and an urban farm in addition to the acres of free pick areas!
