What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Education
S.O.U.L. partners with Ugandan families and 39 Ugandan schools to help students access education by providing financial sponsorship, computer training, and mentorship opportunities. What started with just 40 sponsored students has now become over 450 students, 58 percent of whom are girls and young women, and over 85 percent of students advance from one level to the next (e.g., primary to secondary) in a country where less than 20 percent usually advance. Over 90 percent of the parents of the sponsored students participate in the S.O.U.L. parents’ committee, becoming stronger advocates of their children’s education. Furthermore, S.O.U.L.’s mentorship program, which began in 2015 to support and encourage students throughout their secondary education, has directly impacted 964 students in six different schools.
Maternal Health
S.O.U.L.'s maternal health programs are an innovative, holistic approach towards reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Uganda by addressing the three barriers affecting the maternal health of women in S.O.U.L.’s rural communities: the delay to seek care, the delay to reach proper medical services, and the delay to access quality care.
To address these barriers, in 2015 S.O.U.L. established the Maternal Health Network (MHN) , a three-phase initiative to significantly disrupt the three delays that lead to maternal and infant mortality. The MHN is a bottom-up, community healthcare system package that directly addresses the unrelenting lack of adequate healthcare faced by rural women. By empowering communities to develop life saving solutions today, S.O.U.L. believes that it can bridge the reproductive healthcare gap and ultimately transform communities out of poverty for tomorrow. The MHN combines a multi-staged approach with a community-driven strategy to reduce maternal mortality. Through the MHN, S.O.U.L. has been working tirelessly to equip women with antenatal education and health services, empowering them to have a healthy childbirth. Impacting over 2,000 women each year, S.O.U.L. hopes to prepare and equip thousands more for a safe and healthy childbirth.
This three-phase MHN initiative includes the following:
1. Offer Antenatal Education Classes and train Village Health Teams (VHTs)
2. Develop a Village Emergency Transport System
3. Construct and equip a state-of-the-art Community Birthing Center
Food Security
S.O.U.L.’s livestock cooperatives, primarily headed by and comprised of females, have been a vital means for local women to secure income and to ensure food security within their homes. Four chicken cooperatives, run by women, each rear an average of 300 chickens with three out of four of the groups having reached complete financial sustainability. S.O.U.L. has also established three goat cooperatives that are also run by women. In total, S.O.U.L.’s sustainable business and agricultural cooperatives have benefited 2,497 individuals. S.O.U.L. has also established eight fish ponds in two rural communities that provide a significant source of income for members who lost their livelihoods with the recent construction of a hydroelectric dam. The fish ponds in both communities are 100 percent financially self-sustaining. The project currently produces 50,000 tilapia annually for increased food security and commercial export. The profits are cycled back into the villages, creating a sustainable source of income and jobs. Lastly, in 2015, S.O.U.L. launched the Livestock Learning Center and has since educated over 200 women on sustainable agriculture and livestock techniques as well as business and financial training. These skills are transferable to their homes and businesses where they grow, raise, and sell food. Upon completion, the women can access a microloan with a partner institution.
Women's Empowerment
S.O.U.L. has collaboratively launched 25 sustainable business cooperatives, which have resulted in increased economic empowerment, gender equity, and self-determination for its women members. Over 700 rural women have been equipped with valuable skills and business training, including financial literacy. As a result, women have seen their incomes increase by 300 percent. Additionally, over 90 percent of cooperative members have a group savings account, and many members have opened individual accounts.
