What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Indo History Documentary Film
The Documentary Film: Chronicling the Indo Historical Narrative. This project will be the organization's most powerful long term goal to spread the Indo story and will lay the foundation for other initiatives. Indo history can mostly be found in the Dutch or Indonesian language. The Indo Project's aim is to produce in the English language in order to reach a global audience.
Family Oral History Project
Family Oral History Project: Using historical diaries to make Indo History Come Alive. This segment encourages and works with Indo families to create their own extended family oral history on video, audio, or text and will be part of a collection. Much of Indo history is either in the Dutch or Indonesian language. The Indo Project aims to educate others in the English language to reach a more global audience.
Digital Archives - Family Oral History Project
Digital Archives – Family Oral History Project
Collect and use historical stories to make Indo history come alive. This virtual segment on the website encourages Indo families to create their own extended family oral history on video, audio, or text and will be part of a collection available online stored in digital archives.
Indo Cultural Center
The creation of an Indo Cultural Center that will serve the needs of the Dutch Indo Community whose history and culture are disappearing. The Indo community currently has no gathering center which serves as a place to unify a community which has been fractured and dispersed throughout the world. This international cultural center will have a library with educational resources not only intended for Indos but the general public so they can learn of Indo history & culture. The space will allow for showing films and will feature stimulating interviews and reflections with community members, artists, and more. A true gathering place of a people without a cultural center.
International Community Outreach to Preserve Indo Culture
Engage the Indo community and its constituents at gatherings and large events (like the annual Holland Festival in Long Beach). Inform, recruit new members and request support. Also organize local meetups and partner with other groups to strengthen the Indo communities, unify and provide an opportunity to come together to celebrate Indo culture.Joining coalitions.
Education Academic Involvement
Educate the world about Indo history and culture. Conduct research and establish exhibits, lectures and conferences on Tempo Doeloe, WWII, the Bersiap, Repatriation and the Indo Diaspora. The Indo Project organizes the TIP Annual Lecture Series (first lecture series started in May 2014). We want to educate the world by organizing exhibits in places accessible to the general public. We are seeking funding for 2023-2024. Ultimately, we would like to enhance student engagement & learning such as show-and-tell kits for schoolchildren.
Initiative for the Translation of Indo Literature
Most of Indo history is in the Dutch language. International interest in Indo literature has grown significantly, however, most historical documents and books are in the Dutch language. This initiative will promote, stimulate, and foster high quality translations. To tell the Indo story in the English language with existing and new documentaries. An important reason for making more English language and subtitled documentary films available is to keep alive the Indo culture, history and essence, especially for the younger generations in the English-speaking world.
Short term goal is to translate a selection of existing documentaries available in Dutch by having subtitles added in English. Long term goal is for TIP to produce a film and provide a voice by illustrating the historical ties to the former Dutch East Indies and the complexity of ensuing events which led to the greater Indo diaspora as it exists today.
