Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our goal is to double the amount of programs, events and facilities in order to double the populations that we reach. In order to do this we need additional general operating funding to hire a co-director and help with the administration costs.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Platform
The Platform is a literary open mic, open to the public!
We feature first time readers, early career writers and seasoned, published authors. We encourage using your original poetry and prose, and you’ll always find a supportive literary community ready to listen. Sign up starts at 7:30pm, readings are from 8 to 9:30pm. Each reader gets a 5 minute maximum reading time. If the sign up fills before you put your name down, we’ll put you on the wait list for that night.
Platform Review
latform Review is an ARTS By The People project. Along with our literary open mic reading series, The Platform; our writing workshops; and Chapbook Awards, we promote opportunities and establish a platform for writers and artists. The mission of Platform Review is to showcase the literary voices and visual art from our growing community. We publish annually in print.
Spotlight
SPOTLIGHT is an original Arts By The People video series which highlights and promotes artists from a variety of mediums who are doing unique work in their creative fields. We are working with one-of-a-kind, innovative artists and capturing the essence of their work flow and thought process through intimate documentary-style short films.
Moving Words
ARTS By the People celebrates the art of collaboration between writers and filmmakers. Writers who submit their works to this project will see their words transformed into short films by animation students from various international animation schools. The goal of this unique event is to empower and inspire writers of all ages to tap into their inner creativity. Likewise, Moving Words encourages young animators to bring words to life through their visual art.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to empower individuals through collaborative acts of self-expression. We believe that self-awareness and communication come forth in shared creative acts and that the arts offer universal benefits for people of all ages and backgrounds. Exposure through a diverse range of creative mediums can reach individuals and build communities of small interest groups or generate intergenerational connections. It is our belief that the arts can also bridge social divisions and strengthen understanding, collaboration and acceptance in communities of diversity and need. Our programs are run by talented teaching artists who are experts in their fields. With public support, we are able to keep our programs free for our participants. We believe that the arts should be available and accessible to all. Our strategic aim is to double the amount of current workshops from 60 to 120 monthly, and to double our monthly events.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy is based on three initiatives:
- Increase our annual grants.
- Market our programs to more facilities in New York City and New Jersey.
- Target more private donors and funders that believe in our mission.
This year we are celebrating our tenth anniversary. This event will allow potential funders to see the importance of what we do first hand, and inspire them to support us and donate.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
In order to achieve these goals we are working with a grant writer. Our entire staff is focused on increased marketing awareness through direct customer and client contact, and by using social media. Word of mouth connections by facility activity coordinators has increased our volume by 20% in 2018, and we look to increase that to 30% in 2019.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In ten years are have gown to offer over 60 monthly classes and workshops at various locations, including studios, public schools, bookstores, coffee shops, charter schools, drop-in centers, and senior facilities. We also facilitate monthly art and literary events such as The Platform, a literary open mic, and Spotlight. We also publish The Platform Review, a collection of literary voices and art from our community. We are active in 16 areas of the arts, both local, national and international.
