Kids & Art Foundation
Healing pediatric cancer through the arts
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
43 children each day are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. After a cancer diagnosis, a child has to spend much of their life in the hospital. A pediatric cancer patient waits 2-3 hours from arrival at the facility to the start of chemotherapy, every single visit. In a waiting room setting, studies report that 52% of children are nervous; 42% of children are afraid; 76% of children are bored. Psychosocial concerns can affect adherence to [pediatric cancer] treatment regimens by impairing cognition, weakening motivation, and decreasing coping abilities. Kids and Art Foundation supports pediatric cancer patients and their families by offering healing through art activities in the waiting room, in-hospital bedside, and while isolated at home.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our vision is for an integrated care model where participation in the arts is part of a regular treatment plan for all pediatric cancer patients.
Current clinical practice and research are predominantly focused on physical symptoms without recognition of the psychosocial issues that affect physical, developmental, and functional outcomes (Harman et al, 2017; Mechtel & Stoeckle, 2017).
The acute anxiety and stress surrounding ongoing procedures can create immediate and long-term psychosocial issues including trauma that, in some cases, contribute to post-traumatic symptoms in patients and caregivers (Katz et al, 2018). Frequent and continual stress experiences such as these have an impact on early cognitive development, alter the psychological response to stress, contribute to behavioral issues, and can affect long term mental and physical health (Blair, 2010; Felitti et al., 1998; McEwen, 2000; Shonkoff et al., 2012).
Participation in the creation of art from a discipline chosen by a child allows them to have an engaging, purposeful, normalized childhood experience. Furthermore, creative art that aligns with the patient’s interests allows for the integration of personally motivating activity in the restricted hospital environment (Linhardt, 2020).
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Through public outreach and cultivation of partnerships with hospitals and care centers throughout the U.S., Kids and Art Foundation brings accessible creative art experiences to pediatric cancer patients and their families where they are - hospital waiting rooms, outpatient treatment clinics, hospital bedsides, and in isolation at home.

- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
