What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Many area kids and teens would benefit from learning to swim, sail, and enjoy using the resources of the Chesapeake Bay in a safe manner. Unfortunately, not every family has the resources to teach these skills. Loving and taking care of your surroundings comes from a knowledge of and enjoyment of those resources.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Miles River Yacht Club Foundation seeks to teach young people of the Chesapeake Bay region competitive skills, teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and a desire to excel in life.

Through carefully chosen projects and targeted grants from the MRYC Foundation to selected area non-profit organizations, we teach students about life on the water, and through it, teach them lifelong skills and build their character, in order to making their lives more fulfilling.

Operated entirely by volunteers with extensive backgrounds in non-profit educational organizations, we have developed particular capabilities in:

(1) raising funds from individuals, companies, and family foundations to be used in making grants;

(2) picking non-profit recipients of and projects for MRYC Foundation grants that will accomplish the above goals; and

(3) assuring that the grants we give to achieve the purposes for which they are intended.

Since our founding in 2010 (and after only a little over two years of fundraising), we have already granted $300,000 to 30 youth-oriented competitive sailing, swimming and rowing and maritime-focused educational activities in the Chesapeake Bay region affecting over a thousand children, giving them educational experiences they would otherwise not have. Being totally volunteer-driven, we have kept operating expenses to an absolute minimum, to assure the funds we raise go directly to grant recipients.

While we have developed approximately 1000 financial contributors and we continue to encourage donors who are not members of the Miles River Yacht Club. As an independent 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, we make grants far beyond the confines of the Yacht Club with which we are informally affiliated, and are developing strategies to reach out to those who support these organizations.
