What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Brooklyn Boatworks Opti

Each group of 12 students in our boat building program begins with 4 sheets of plywood, a set of plans, and basic hand tools. They work together to build their own optimist pram sailboat. At the end of the school year, each class sails its boat at the Student Spirit Boat Launch & Regatta. Through consistent interaction, supportive instructors, and a stimulating hands-on curriculum Brooklyn Boatworks provides students with a strong background in academics, experiential learning, critical thinking, problem solving, and project-based teamwork.
Our specialized STEM lessons in water pollution, coupled with field trips to the waterfront, encourage students to look analytically at environmental science issues. Our lessons in buoyancy, the physics of sailing, and chart reading are taught using experiential learning techniques. We use systems models and maps, and have students create their own floating boat models to encourage students of all learning persuasions to learn by doing and through discovery, using logic, planning and precise project management – skills that are relevant in school and beyond.
Students participate in learning that not only engages their hands, but also challenges their minds and allows them to learn in new ways.
