Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Reinvent Albany advocates for more transparent and accountable government in New York State. This includes changing policies, practices, and laws to strengthen Freedom of Information Law, Open Data, transparent budgeting practices, fact-based policy-making, and honest presentation of costs and benefits of public policies.

Reinvent Albany has influenced the creation and implementation of dozens of New York State and New York City laws and policies, including helping to draft and pass the 2012 New York City open data law — the first open data law in the world. Reinvent Albany also won the issuance of NYS open data executive order #95 and multiple amendments strengthening the state Freedom of Information Law and formalizing open data at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Our basic playbook is to draw attention to an issue with expert analysis, get our analysis highlighted by the news media, and use this public attention to win changes in policy, practice, and law. Reinvent Albany is regularly quoted by major media outlets like the New York Times and Economist and has been cited in over 3,000 media reports over the last decade.
