Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Building for the Future
This program supports rural school students of little economic means with uniforms and textbooks; it supports building classrooms and restrooms, and provides clean water, solar energy, and recycling sheds for marginal rural schools.
Learning is Change
This program takes environmental education to a new place! Based on the fundamental premise of care and respect for self the students and teachers journey outwards towards their peers and the world around them. The program empowers a child, showing them that they matter and can make a significant difference by living more sustainably, and protecting and conserving natural resources.
Books to Fly
Our reading program installs small libraries in impoverished rural schools. It actively promotes reading with song and dance, puppet shows, storytelling, and theatre. Our lessons boost writing and thinking skills, expand creativity and promote critical analysis.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
From 2015 - 2020, the goals for each one of the organisation's three projects are:
Building for the Future:
5 provisions for clean water
5 provisions for solar energy
5 recycling sheds
1 major provision (i.e: restrooms, classrooms) of key school infrastructure per year
1 minor provision(i.e: desks) of key school infrastructure per year
Learning is Change:
Program functioning yearly in 10 schools
Online environmental curricula (materials and activities) available for
teachers to enrich their current environmental lessons
Books to Fly:
25 small functional libraries and corresponding reading programs
installed
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have selected specific geographic areas within Costa Rica that have high poverty indices. In each geographic area we partner with a small business or organisation that wants to support education and environment. Based on a need and feasibility assessment, we select one or two schools with which to work in each area. With the school, we identify key needs and create a yearly plan with a vision to working with the school for five years. In general terms, for each school we: implement environmental education for five years and pass the knowledge off to the teachers; address 1 major infrastructure issue (i.e.:classrooms, restrooms) and 2 or 3 minor issues (i.e.: desks, roofs); install the library and reading program, and attend to solar energy or water quality needs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have the support of:
engineers for Building for the Future;
and experienced educators and volunteer staff for Learning is Change and Books to Fly.
We have partners that support some of the organisations operational expenses like room and board, and transport when we are in the field.
We have established points for collecting project focussed donations.
We are slowly but surely expanding our partner and donor base!
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
All programs have made steady progress towards fulfilment of their goals!
Largest challenges: expanding partner and donor base; increasing funding, including establishing thriving social media as a strategy to do so; incrementing board involvement.
