What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Scientific Research
The research mission of JKBF is to identify the biological underpinnings and environmental catalysts that lead to suicide attempts and to understand how these operate to predispose or
influence at-risk individuals. Environmental catalysts of interest include chemical exposures, infectious agents, nutritional intake, lifestyle factors, and head injuries, among others. Biological mechanisms of interest include immune activation, energy metabolism, oxidative stress, the microbiome, and neurotransmission, as well as other areas of inquiry not traditionally
prioritized in suicide research. The goal is to uncover exposures and mechanisms underlying risk and develop interventions that will reduce suicide. JKBF is dedicated to fostering and connecting scientists engaging in the early stage research on these topics.
Support and Services
Since 2010, JKBF has supported the work of Active Minds, the nation’s premier nonprofit organization for mental health awareness and education for students and young adults ages 14–
25. JKBF grants have provided sponsorship and student scholarships for the Active Minds annual conference; funding for online data sharing, webinar, and training platforms; and recent support for the preparation of evidence-based best practice guidelines for colleges based on an evaluation of Active Minds’ programs published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
Grants to Bard College, a liberal arts and sciences institution that inspires curiosity, a love of learning, idealism, and a commitment to civic participation have supported the Class of 2010
Scholarship Fund; the Let’s Talk counseling outreach program and peer counselors; and on campus
guest speakers with relevance to mental
health.
Creative Expression
To highlight contemporary artists whose work was not recognized in their lifetimes, JKBF developed POBA, Where the Arts Live, a
groundbreaking online arts hub. POBA was founded to showcase, promote, and preserve artistic legacies through compelling displays and interesting human stories about contemporary art makers of all genres. Through online resources and services, POBA assists individuals and institutions that own or manage a creative legacy or arts collection to preserve, protect, document, digitize, complete and, in many other ways, ensure these collections live on. POBA also
assists working artists in managing their own works for future preservation, viewing, and value. www.poba.org
