Seeds in the Middle

Growing Hip2B Healthy students, one school at a time

aka Seeds in the Middle   |   Brooklyn, NY   |  seedsinthemiddle.org

Mission

Seeds in the Middle, named by 4th graders, inspires parents, educators, students and their community to create healthier places to live and grow. We nurture the whole child. We empower and educate all to get healthy and scale disparities. Our base is central Brooklyn, one of 3 NYC neighborhoods with the highest obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates. Youth are the change-makers. We pilot Hip2B Healthy schools - models for replication, locally, statewide and nationally. We teach how to grow, market, access and prepare nutritious food, how to exercise, how to engage in the arts, all elements needed to promote life-changing lifelong health. Our partners come from all walks of life.. We cross cultures. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.

Hip2B Healthy Market

A market run by students, overseen by faculty, which sells healthy snacks for as little as 50 cents to lure youth away from junk food at bodegas. Students also make fresh snacks, like smoothies and popcorn and fresh orange juice. Business skills, math, science and literacy lessons are integrated into core curriculum so students gain academically while promoting healthy alternatives in their school communities.

Population(s) Served

Free and low-cost soccer training for underserved children in Crown Heights' Hamilton Metz Field. an underused field. We've engaged more than 1,000 children aged 4-18 in our programs, plus volunteer coaches and parents, in clinics and after-school sessions both on weekends and during the week year-round.

Population(s) Served

Garden educators work with elementary aged students in the obesity epidemic at our Hip2B Healthy schools to grow gardens both in indoor growing boxes and outdoor planters. Home Depot has partnered to build the beds and grow boxes. Gardening is tied to core curriculum in science, math, literacy. For example. teachers integrate lessons on measuring by having students measure the grow boxes, and space seeds. and turn this into math problems. Gardening is also used to begin organic composting with worms, and recycling and environmental stewardship, also integrated into curriculum and nutrition.

Population(s) Served

Chef Nights feature chefs who come into the school kitchens for an evening and teach students to prepare nutritious, delicious meals for the same cost or less than a fast food combo. After preparing, the chef will give a demo to families, including parents, and then all eat, go home with recipe so they can replicate in their own kitchens.

Population(s) Served

Hip2B Healthy days every year on Martin Luther King Day weekend which offers farmstand, student run market offering healthy snacks, sports, arts, flea market, health screenings, joyful fun by engaging dozens of volunteers across the city.
